With temps in the 30s and 40s, would that mean ticks shouldn't be a problem?

The ticks will be walking around with tiny Kahtoola Microspikes for snow and ice.

"The ticks will be walking around with tiny Kahtoola Microspikes for snow and ice."

Hmmmm. You've got tricky little buggers out there, don't you…..

"Anybody else flying 2000 miles for the event?"

A touch more, actually! ;-)

It'll be close to 2000 miles for me, it'd be 2100 if I were driving but I'm not sure what route the plane will follow.

Someone asked about ticks … unlikely, but snow fleas could be a definite maybe.

If ya want to hear a good tick story ask Sam H about his northwestern WI NCT experience.

Was hiking today late afternoon at Foothills Park in Palo Alto a little bit further down from the Skyline Ridge, and the air was very clear with a view toward the taller mountains near Coe – think Mt. Hamilton was one of them – saw quite a bit of snow, but all at the upper elevations.

Rain, cold or snow, it's just a short 3 mile walk in and you can't beat the great company or the gear to check out up close.

Just bring very warm insulation top and bottoms especially for the evening when you're standing around or sitting. Also if rain and wind expected you might want to adjust your choice of shelter/bivvy. If you have an enclosed shelter a candle lantern offers some nice heat and ambiance.

If sustained rain is expected a good size tarp as mentioned above will make hanging out easier.

2-3 of these would have been nice: http://www.hilleberg.com/home/products/altai/altai.php

I have 2 large tarps, but they are heavy duty super heavy weight polyvinyl – too heavy to carry in.

Does anyone have any larger but lighter weight tarps with some lightweight poles? Some of us can also use trekking poles not in use with shelters to hold them up.

That's the spirit EJ!

Here is a little map for Friday night and Sat. departure point. We have a bunch of spaces reserved.

Ken, those sites aren't the ones we're using, just sites next to the backpacker parking, correct? From what I understand we're 3 miles in.

Could you repost information on meeting points and times for Friday and Saturday night?

Will there be trail maps at the backpacker parking?

I'm sorry if this info is above I haven't read the full thread.

This is the campground for Friday night. it is also the starting point for Saturday's hike to Manzanita Point. Especially if you are having things hauled into camp.

Departure is 9:30AM Sat.

The trailhead is across from the visitors center.

Maps will be available.

People will be trickling in all day on Friday. You know you can spot another BPLr.

Thanks very much for saving me a bunch of scrolling. Can't wait.

Anyone ever drive there from Palo Alto/Mountain View/Sunnyvale? About how long a drive do you figure without traffic? I typically find Google times on the slow side for driving over 45 minutes without traffic.

Another thing that can be done in rain to make hanging out easier – form the shelters in a tight circle with openings/doors to the center. Not perfect, but allows people to shelter under their tarps/tent and maybe still communicate.

Ken,

For those driving in the support vehicles….does there need to be any concern that they might get stuck in snow?

IE, do they need to have chains or cables?

Would suck to have a vehicle trapped out there.

Plus, make sure the battery is able to handle the cold….ice scrapper for the windshield, etc.

I'd bet mud would be more worrisome than snow for the vehicles. Are they SUVs or pickups? High clearance? 4×4? I wouldn't want to drive an economy car down there in such conditions. Though I do remember the road being not very steep and of good quality.

If the park staff deems the road to Manzanita Point is too wet/soft, they will restrict access. So we will play it by ear. Their call.

Car camping next year?

Spot forecast for Manzanita Point:
http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=37.176321068976314&lon=-121.51913166046143&site=mtr&smap=1&unit=0&lg=en&FcstType=text

Friday: Snow showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Friday Night: Snow showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 31.

Saturday: A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 37.

Saturday Night: A slight chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 31.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 43.

It looks like a mid-july BP trip I had to Vogelsang (Yosemite) a few years back. So much for showing off my 5lb. kit. I'll probably be bringing more 'conventional' gear.

I'm betting that the park forbids vehicle access in these conditions.

In psychological preparation, I'll be listening to this [ http://www.prx.org/pieces/3603-in-defense-of-bad-weather ] on the way up.

Hey Jay,

Could you possibly bring a couple of extra esbit tabs, like 4, for me since I can't fly them? I'll pay for them! (Gosh, I'm really racking up the favors from y'all!).

It's going to be cold…..no worries, I'll bring lots of extra hats ;)

Another reason to keep the snoring down (and to bring ear plugs to avoid the horror)

http://www.coestatepark.com/wild_pig.htm

Photobucket

1) Attracting potential mates and the resulting violent snorts and cussing given off by an amorous wild boar and a not-so-cooperative lightweight backpacker

2) Being mistaken for a wild boar by one of the parks predators “More remarkably, volunteer Ruby Domino observed a coyote dragging a medium-sized pig into Fish and Game Pond (just south of Coit Lake), in an apparent attempt to drown it.”

Or, on a more positive note, perhaps Jack or Ken could attract a fresh hot English breakfast for everyone. Anyone bringing tea, marmalade, toast and eggs to round things out?

A crew of us are backpacking starting on Friday morning. We'll be the really wet ones at the main gathering.

"PERSONS WITH ANY OUTDOOR
ACTIVITIES OR INTERESTS IN THE BAY AREA SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR WINTER
LIKE WEATHER INCLUDING FREEZING TEMPERATURES AND ACCUMULATING
SNOWFALL IN THE HILLS."

I'm excited!
