Are they a poor choice if you plan to use your poles to hold up your tarp etc? Will the curved handle keep it from standing up as well?

You probably mean the mild ergo grips like those from Leki. Those are fine.
The more radical grips from Pacerpole are usually fine for tarps as well, although they usually require a bit more effort in placement. They are also hard to use with some shelters that have grip pockets like the Six Moon Designs Refuge, but I've still managed to make it work. The Pacerpole grips are quite rigid which helps.

It only has a 15 degree angle handle, which is the same as the Leki ones I guess.
Yeah- no worries. That should be fine with any shelter or tarp.
