What are some creative ideas for making pot lifters or some sort of substitute for those pots that do not come with any wire handles? I've got a 1L pot that resembles an Antigravity Gear pot.

I'm trying to find something other than a bandana or piece of clothing that weighs less than 1 ounce.

find some of those silicone pot grabbers at the grocery store and cut them down so you would only need a couple of fingers.

    something like this:

or GSI has one that comes with their pot.

Cool idea. How much does one of the grippers weight? (the smaller ones)

I have to carry a knife with pliers (Leatherman Squirt P4) anyway because I don't have the strength/dexterity in my fingertips to deal with strap adjustments (especially when a strap end pulls almost out of the buckle with only a tiny part protruding). I use the pliers as a potlifter. This knife is 1.9 oz. If you don't otherwise need pliers, then you'd need to factor the difference in weight if you normally carry a lighter knife.

My attempts at using a bandanna ended up with lots of burned sections in the bandanna. And once the bandanna is wet (necessary to put out the fire, lol!), it's useless until it dries. Good idea to turn the stove off first! :-)

Some googling will turn up lots of ideas for homemade pot lifters. Here's one from Bill Fornshell: http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/forums/thread_display.html?forum_thread_id=2365
I once found one on a stove website (not Wings) made from aluminum strapping (the kind those of us in earthquake-prone areas use to tie down our water heaters), but I have lost the bookmark.

I use a piece of foil insulation as a pot gripper. It's the same stuff I use to make my pot cozies. It works very well and is the lightest solution that I have found thus far.

The answer can depend on what pot you are using. If it is aluminium then you are going to need something to take the heat.

However, I cook with an MSR Titan 1.5 L pot, over a canister stove. I can normally pick this up at the rim with my bare fingers while the stove is running at low power. Can't get much lighter than that.

    Cheers

Roger neglected to say that he had Nomex fabric surgically implanted on his bare fingers at an early age.

You could easily install a Ti Spoke bail handle. The weight is negligible.

these clip on, you only have the "lip" on the outside, nothing inside to offer protection from heat

I use Icebreaker 320g/m2 wool gloves which weigh 1.8oz for a medium pair. Wool doesn't burn/melt when exposed to reasonable heat like a nylon glove does. It works great as both a pot lifter and of course as gloves. $22 here:

GSI includes a small silicone pot lifter with some of their cook sets.

It has a magnet in it so that you can stick it to your fuel canister.
