This may seem basic and borish but I am going to ask anyway. Where and how do you guys and gals pack the shelter pegs in your kits? If you don't carry shelter pegs I don't want to hear your gloating about having a kit that is lighter than mine here either kids. Thanks for playing. I hope to learn something here.

edit-I guess I should add that I usually carry my pegs/stakes lying flat in the bottom of my pack and would welcome any critiques of my method for packing the pegs as well.

I roll my tent — with poles and stakes forming the core. I either rubber band the stakes or toss them into a silnylon stake bag.

Mine has changed throughout time. sometimes I carry my tent poles in their own stuff sack, so I pack the stakes in a small sack, and into the pole's stuff sack, that way I always know where they are, and when its time to setup, its pretty intuitive.

Otherwise they go into a lid pocket, or front pack pocket, but always in their own stuff sack (silnylon right now, but might experiment with tyvek/cuben soon) so they dont end up everywhere

I really like to compress my shelter (sometimes even using a compression sack) so packing the poles/stakes with the shelter body isn't an option for me (wear and tear on the netting etc)

This is all you need friends–The tubes way 0.4 to 0.5 oz
and are very secure…No snags ever. The large tube holds 12 stakes plus two Y-Stakes(MSR Ground Hogs) w/ two S-Biners.

Jay that is what I am after. I was hoping someone would weigh in with something fresh. So far you take home the spoils of combat here in the tent stake packing thread. Great idea. I was trying to brainstorm up a way to protect my gear from my dirty and sharp pegs but was having trouble coming up with anything on my own. Thanks for sharing. This was exactly the type of thing I was looking for. What is your source for the tubes?

The first tube is from Target and it held 3 liquid anti- bacteria hand soap containers..The 2ND is from a 7-11 a mini mart that held chocolate covered sunflower seeds..My eye is always on the hunt for UL stuff…I bought galvanized cables for my gaiters today–What will I find tomorrow?

Jeffrey,

12 titanium shepherd's hook stakes in a small mesh/net bag with a drawcord and a tiny cordlock.

This gets packed vertically inbetween the overlapping layers of my Ridgerest short sleeping pad that is rolled inside of my frameless pack. The rest of my gear goes into the hollow spot formed by the pad.

I use a tyvek sack that I made by cutting off one side of a FedEx envelope. I just used clear packing tape to seal up the side where I cut to make a tube. Then I cut off a few inches of one side of that tube, so now there's a long flap to go over the top which I secure with a rubber band.

I like the plastic box idea for sharp stakes. I use MSR Groundhogs though and they are not too pointy–I really just need something to contain any dirt and keep them together and not making any noise.

PS–it's free.

Foraged packaging and dirtbagging! It just doesn't get any better unless you throw a case of Old Milwaukee and a campfire into the mix. You just scored extra bonus points Jay. I will start the hunt. It will likely be cheap then too. Outstandingly spectacularful idea man.

Brian scores foraging and dirtbagging poinst as well. He has earned a share of the spoils of war too.

Jay you are still leading the hunt though buddy.

Hey I am enjoying a Pabst Blue Ribbon right now! I have beer goggles for gear.

I carry my shelter now in the front pocket so there is less pressure there than inside the pack. With an older pack I used to shove the tent inside so I used the plastic cover of a S2S stuff sack. Like this one but cut to size.
The other is sold with some Luxe pegs that were mentioned recently here.

Franco scores points for foraging and dirtbagging but Jay is still winning.

Jay 1st place.
Franco 2nd place.
Brian 3rd place.

Thanks to all who have participated and to those who will participate.

+1 on the S2S plastic case. I either use that or an old small nylon stuffsack modified.

"I use a tyvek sack that I made by cutting off one side of a FedEx envelope."

I did something very similar. I cut off the bottom 3 inches or so of a Tyvek envelope. I kept the long end open. I put the stakes in, roll it up, and place a rubber band around the package. Works great!

This thread has produced much more fruit than I had originally hoped for. Way cool.

Major score for Brian! No foraging or dirtbagging points but the tubular webbing is a sweet idea.

In a small bag in a side pocket that does not have my shelter in it. I don't like the idea of my stakes rubbing or poking my shelter.

I use my caldera cone caddy to hold my stakes.

Plenty of room in there for the various parts of the stove set-up along with other odds and ends like shelter stakes, dropper bottles, etc.

The caddy doubles as my water scoop too.
