Andy-
Your two packs shipped yesterday.
Thanks!
Nice Andy :D
Yeppers, a Burn and Exodus. Problem now is that Im looking to start collecting gear for winter and will need a pack. I know a lot of people use a golite pinnacle. How does the ARK compare size wise? like main pack volume.
I ordered a custom Super Exodus, can't wait for it to arrive!
About the Ark vs the Pinnacle, MLD's site states 52 liters main pack, 69 liters total for the Ark. The Pinnacle in a size large has a volume of 72 liters.
So the Ark is definately a bit smaller, and to use all the volume you'd have to use the outside pockets.
I own a Pinnacle, but not (yet?) an Ark, so I can't compare the two any further.
Got my Super Burn. Initial impressions are that it looks great. Fits right. I was going to try it out in Yosimeti on the 19th, but that got cancelled. :)
And the pics are…..where?
I'll post some when I get home on Tuesday. Sorry for the delay.
I got mine today. Looks awesome. Excellent craftsmanship.
Now debating on driving 3 hours north after fireworks tonight to do a 18-20 hour trip with lots of fishing although its suppose to be in the 90's.
@ Andy,
Do it.
The Burn has really became my main summer pack. Really like the size and comfort of the pack. Just used my new Prophet on a trip from Dick's Creek Gap to Winding Stair this past weekend.
although it's not a Burn, I thought you might want to see some pics of the MLD Super Exodus I received yesterday!
/me happy :)

I went for a short hike last night to watch the meteor shower, carrying everything for two guys cowboy camping (in case of rain, we'd have just hiked back).
I'm absolutely smitten with this pack. While smaller than my GoLite Jam2, there's still more than enough room and I love the mesh pocket in the front – easy to see what you're going for and dive right in. The optional bungee cord came in handy for carrying a foam pad on the outside center (I hate having pads on the side). On top of the beautiful, practical design, it was the sheer comfort that really blew me away. This fit my back perfectly and I found myself needing neither the hip strap nor the optional sternum strap. Perhaps I would if loaded with food for 3-4 days, but for a short overnight, it was comfortable as can be.
MLD strikes again with a phenomenal product that has me hopping and skipping up the trail. Thanks, Ron!
I'd go for the MLD Exodus for the extra room – OR the Burn with add-on side pockets for the extra rooma and easy access to often-used items.
My current pack is an REI Cruise UL 60 W/ REI side pockets. It gets the job done for this merely "lightweight" backpacker. Doubtful I'll ever make it down to the UL level. Why? See below—->
TENT > TT Moment + 2 stakes
PACK > REI Cruise UL 60 W/ REI side pockets
SLEEP SYSTEM > WM Megalite bag, ancient Thermarest Lite reg. mattress @ 15 oz.
COOK SET > 1 L. aluminum pot W/ MYOG very lite alum. lid, Brunton Flex canister burner or Vargo Triad Ti stove base for ESBIT tabs, MSR wind screen
SHOES > Merrill Moab Ventilators or Moab Mid GTX boots, depending on weather/season
Light but not yet UL.
I've taken the Burn out several times never – never for more than one night, alas – and I'm liking it more and more with each hike. It's comfortable even when fully loaded and the design is such that I can take a lot more than I expected.
For a simple overnight with a friend last night, it looked like this:

In the main pack:
-Marmot Hydrogen sleeping bag
-Jacks R Better No Sniveler quilt
-MLD Cuben Solo Pro tarp
-MLD SuperLight bivy
-6' NeoAir sleeping pad
-1 glass bottle wine
-1 large stainless steel thermos of coffee
-1 stuff sack of warm clothes (hat, mittens, socks, windshirt)
In each side pocket:
-Gatorade bottle of water
-Ground cloth (the "seran wrap" kind)
In the mesh pocket:
– Ditty bag
– First AID bag
– bunch of food bars
– Two headlamps
Bungee cord:
Blue foam pad
What I didn't have was a bag of food or a stove. However, ditch one of the sleeping bags, the bottle of wine, and the thermos, and that frees up more than enough room for food and stove. I'd then drop the Steripen into the mesh pocket and be all set for a real multi-day hike.
I was debating on going with a bag this small, but I hope this picture will give you a better idea of what kind of space you have to play with.
@ Eric,
Even with your current list of items, I believe you could use the Burn with some creativity for overnight/weekends in the warmer time of year. That being said, it might require some custom requests from MLD in the Burn, x2 added side compresson straps would go a long way to allow you to strap your TT Moment and pad upright on the outside of the pack. The Megalite compresses very well and would fill the bottom, leaving you some wiggle room at the top of the pack for a wind shell, tights, gloves, food. 1L pot and stove/canister can fit in the stretch mesh pocket in the pack front. It's possible, but might not be your cup of tea trying to cram it all in which I completely understand.
w/ two sleeping bags and a bottle of wine (and other gear) should be just fine for 3-4 day trips :)
for those of you with super versions of the MLD packs… have you encountered rain so far and if so, does it accumulate in the now nonmesh dyneema (waterproof yeah?) pockets? do they have drains? I was thinking this could be a hassle.
Thanks for your time.
Super Versions have a grommet drain hole on each side pocket and two on the center rear pocket.
@ Ron
will you explain the differences between the Burn and Super Burn
thanks
AW
I can post pictures of the two, a standard MLD Burn and a "super" Burn, side by side if helpful.
Thom- if you don't mind that would be great. I looked on the MLD site, didn't see anything concerning "super"
thanks
AW
ah, ok, thanks ron, couldn't see those in the pic.
adam, the differnces are listed on the MLD site, in the packs section.
Russ, thanks, I found it assuming "super" is the same for all MLD packs. Adding Dyneema pockets, extra on the bottom and heavier strapping
Thom- no pics necessary, thanks for offering
