I carry olive oil to supplement freeze dried foods. I've always stored this in small disposable bottles (from water, juice, whatever), most of which have sealed without incident.

I've had a much harder time finding wide mouth containers for oil or oily foods–for example, natural nut butters where the oil separates, or oil-packed sundried tomatoes. I bought one of those little 4oz capacity nalgene jars, and it leaks oil like crazy. Because I don't trust the jar, I've tried putting the jar in a ziploc, but dealing with the oily jar is messy.

Can anybody recommend a wide-mouth container that will hold at least half a cup, and that seals well enough that oil stays in even when hiking in 90 weather?

Sorry, I cannot recomend a jar for you. But have you tried using a small piece of plasic wrap on your jar, and then screw on the lid. I have done this before to keep a jar from leaking when the lid did not work alone.

Hi Nathan,

I eventually switched from jars to a bottle for my olive oil. I use a Crystal Geyser 8-ounce water bottle and it never leaks, and is likewise very easy to dispense from. Price is right, too.

Cheers,

Rick

Sherry, that's a lovely catfish. Does he/she have a name? :-)

Cheers,

Rick

I use and empty plastic vitamin container for sugar. It has a wide mouth and would be suitable for oil also. Thanks mum. haha

have a medical friend who uses urine sample containers for all sorts of fluid like concoctions on the trail – they rarely leak as you would hope

I have also used empty spice jars, but not sure how leakproof they would be. Some are and some are not in my experience.

The catfish was not around long enough to get a name. Unless maybe Yum Yum counts:)

Nick, are the containers new or recycled? :-)

Nick,

Must remember to "borrow" a couple from the OB's office at my next visit. Theirs are factory sealed even……

Rick–
I agree, for straight oil, water bottles work great. I have no idea what's different about the water bottle seal that keeps it from leaking oil. But peanut butter jars and the little nalgene jars haven't worked for me.

Ken–
I think a gasket would work. I have *no idea* where to buy a food grade gasket. Any suggestions?

look at your local hardware store for plumbing o rings. Silicone o rings work fine as well
