Hello All
I have a little tweak to an old issue to bring up. I know the common wisdom on washing down; front loading washer, down specific detergent, warm water, delicate cycle etc. I even read the thread on sport specific detergent being a marketing scheme perpetrated on us gullible outdoors people. I have another question, however, and it does concern detergent and in-home front loading washing machines, as opposed to laundromat machines. I have a low energy front loader at home and it requires high efficiency detergent such as Tide HE. This has something to do with standard detergent creating to much sudzing and thus overflowing the machine. This sounds bad and is something I obviously want to avoid. However, I also don't want to ruin my down equipment. So my question is can I use a supermarket high efficiency detergent like TIDE HE on my down gear or does Nikwax or somebody make a down detergent for high efficiency washers? I can wait to get some answers but my Montbell jacket is getting a bit ripe.

I have a HE machine as well. I use 1/2 the recommended detergent/down wash and use the extra rinse cycle. Does fine.

No, do not use Tide or any household detergent for down or for any DWR fabrics. All these have additives which screw up the surface of the down and the fabrics. Bad news.

Sport specific detergents are NOT a marketing scam (well, not in general). I can recommend the 'down wash' detergents and specifically the Atsko Sports Wash as being suitable for both down and DWR fabrics. But other brands such as Nikwax are also suitable.

Cheers

Has anyone ever used Woolite to wash their down gear. I was going to try it before but chickened out and ordered some ReviveX online.

Hi, I was wondering if castile soap is safe to use on down. Thanks,
Sharon

I'd just use the Atsko Sportwash that Roger recommended. You can buy it at Walmart (in hunting/fishing section NOT detergent section) for $4 a bottle that will last you forever.

The Atsko waterproofer (not the silicone one, but one for breathable fabrics) works great too.

$4. Why risk it with anything else.

As to the OPs question, the Atsko stuff doesn't sud up very much, so should be fine for your HE washer. It also had no smell at all, them hunters are serious about such things.

I also have a High Efficiency front loading wash machine that requires HE detergents. I don't want to ruin my gear, but I don't want to ruin the washing machine either….It sounds like some people have used the tech wash with some success in their HE wash machines, but I was wondering if people have successfully used some of the other products in their HE wash machine, such as the TX Direct Wash-In, etc.

I'm thinking of getting some Paramo gear, but evidently you need to wash it a lot with Tech wash and periodically with the TX Direct Wash-in. Not a big deal if I can wash at home, but if I have to go to the laundromat every time I want to wash and treat my jacket, pants, etc. then it might not be worth it for me.

Why does this HE bit scream of sheer marketing spin-doctor crap to me?
HE … ah, crap.

Well, mostly for energy savings, yes, it is crap.

However, HE detergent is of the low sudsing variety. Once in a while, you can use anything, but, it can cause excesive suds if you use too much.
