My 2ND backpacking trip with my girlfriend soon to be wife. My pack is on the left,a Jansport at 5,500Ci. I brought everything and the kitchen sink too! It was maybe 60+ LBS. Thank goodness for Beyond Backpacking by Ray Jardine.

Look at our knees and backs- they are buckling under the weight.

I know it may not seem like huge heavy packs… but between the two of us we must have been sporting over 110 lbs of gear! I am ashamed to say it… but we had a winter mountaineering tent in the middle of summer that we wanted to try out! Pemi Traverse

2003 AT pack

This is before my first overnight /thru-hike on the AT in 2003: 50+ pack weight. So young and innocent. I cut that down to around 20 by Katahdin, then around 10 after BPL on my next thru in 2008.
