Not sure where exactly to post this.

It hit me while browsing the forums that certain posts are just gems of information or insight; and it would be nice to be able to tag those particular ones for future reference.

I would love to be able to tag, or star, or something like google RSS reader does, to BPL posts. I don't know how this could be implemented, It'd make me happy.

Andrew is spot on, as I would love to have the ability to locate those posts that happen to contain useful information. BPL is such a great resource but the only unfortunate thing is trying to remember where you saw that great post about a recipe, tent staking strategy, best down jacket…You get the idea.

Might not be exactly what you are after but I simply watch the threads that interest me, that way even when the discussion ends you can find them via your profile.

A good suggestion though.

Cheers

Use the watch this thread button and reference from your profile. simple. I also have a bookmarked folder for the "good stuff".

The way I accomplish this: I created a folder in my bookmarks for BPL. If I come across a post that I know I'd like to reference later, I save the URL into that folder. Direct access back to the thread.

Ditto. Although, most forum packages do offer an option for creating sticky threads that sit at the top.

First, a note on our forums: We are using a custom forum software which is getting to be a bit "legacy". This is both good and bad. It allows us to do unique stuff with our forums and site and keeps us (and our users) safer from the security threats of popular software (PHPBB2, Joomla, et al). The downside is that any and all changes require our developer to custom code them which is both time consuming and costly.

That being said, to address this suggestion at hand, we do have a watch list functionality built into our forums that doesn't get utilized all that much I don't believe. It was mentioned in this thread but I'll re-mention it to drive the point home. The other suggestion to create a personal folder of bookmarks on your personal machine is a good one as well. I employ the del.icio.us service to maintain a pretty massive list of UL related links not only from BPL but also from all over the Web.

To use BPL's Watch List functionality.

1. Click the "Watch This Thread" link located toward the top-right of a thread you're interested in.

2. To view this list click the "View My Profile" link located in the right sidebar of most pages in the "Community" section of the BPL Web site.

3. Note the list of "Watched" threads that appears there.

Thanks for all the ideas on this. To me, it seems quite a credit to BPL that there's so much good info available on the site. I took a (very quick) look at delicious and it has potential…

I've got to start using the "watch" function here. But ideally I could index (or tag) threads by category (as it appears delicious is). Ie, "fabrics," "insulation," "stove efficiencies," etc. If I were to simply "watch" all the good threads here, I'd still have quite a mess to sort thru! Probably best for now to figure out a bookmark index/folder something on my own… well, not computer, 'cause I use several… perhaps email account or something?
