I’m looking for a truly leakproof (even in airplanes) plastic container for my sunblock lotion.

I’ve used REI snap lid and Granite Gear screw-on lid containers and the lotion will ooze out time to time. Any recommendations?

Finally, I know I could use a bottle instead but the last portions are always hard to squeeze out.

Hi Ben

Any small Nalge container will meet your requirements. They have a patented seal on the lids which works. The seal can withstand melted butter and a 1000 m rise in altitude. We use them all the time.

The old laboratory adage — There's only 2 types of containers, Nalgene and leaky.

I've also had good success with the BPL balm jars, but lately I've just used 1 ounce tubes of sunscreen.

Gentlemen — this seems very promising. Has either of you taken your Nalgene containers on plane travels?

Never had a leak from Nalgene. The 2oz contain that travel suds comes in with the flip squirt top has also be completely reliable in my experience. I am still using a recycled container that I think I purchased in the 1980s. I don’t have a lot of experience with them, but there are some Silicone tubes which my wife has had good luck with for the last 2 or 3 years.

Never had a Nalgene leak on a plane trip, BPL jars and micro-dropper bottles also worked fine.

I've used Nalgene jars (like Roger's picture) as digestion vessels in laboratory ovens — I'm sure the pressure differential was greater than on a plane trip. No leaks…

I also use Nalgene containers, but I must say that I have had some of them leak. It seems like olive oil finds it's way out of them. I always double bag my olive oil.

I have a feeling that certain liquids are harder to contain than others; for example, alcohol, and then oils and the like.

I think thicker liquids and gels should be OK. My container will be used for my alchemist mixture of Ultrathon bug lotion and REI sunblock lotion. I've had excellent results with this throughout my recent 7-month trip. Once I get my hands on a Nalgene container, my life will be complete (I think).

OK, let's review the Nalge bottle story.
If you go to Nalge Outdoors and browse around at
http://www.nalgene-outdoor.com/about/history.html
you will find a little screed thus:

'How it all started…
Back in 1949, a Rochester, New York chemist named Emanuel Goldberg developed the first plastic pipette holder. Along with three workers, he began the Nalge Company in a small building at 625 South Goodman Street.

For years Goldberg and his growing team developed the NALGENE line of state-of-the-art polyethylene laboratoryequipment: centrifuge bottles, filter units, storage tanks.

Obviously, it wasn't the kind of stuff you toss into your backpack for a weekend in the woods.

But there were rumors floating around … stories about scientists taking the smaller, more convenient bottles out of the lab and using them on hikes and excursions.

By the 1970s this "unofficial" use for NALGENE bottles caught the eye of Marsh Hyman (President of the Nalge Company in Rochester, New York).'

One of the scientists taking the bottles out of the lab was … ME. I told the Australian distributor to put some of the bottles into gear shops. They sold. So he told Head Office about this, and the rest is history.

Cheers
PS: yes, they take plane travel just fine.

Just the type of heart-warming Christmas story for us gear heads! Thanks, Roger.

What about their version!?
The Boy Scout connection…
Marsh had a son who was in the Boy Scouts. He and his fellow Scouts used NALGENE lab bottles on the trail. They were perfect as water bottles; for storing powdered drinks and pancake mix; and for carrying matches and shampoo and snacks and all sorts of camping supplies.

When he learned about these great new uses for his lab bottles, Marsh Hyman went to the Nalge Specialty Department with a mission:

"Spread the word to outdoorspeople all over! Tell them about this new line of high-quality camping equipment."

And that's how NALGENE Outdoor Products started.

Hi Ken

The bit in italics is quoted directly from their web site. I have known about it for some time.
