I, also, carry a down bag in the northwest with synthetic insulated clothing. It’s bivy sac or freestanding tent on climbing trips because I’m now old enough to not care what someone thinks if I’m stuffed in there bum style and I’m old enough that I’m pretty much just climbing into something that doesn’t take a lot of thought or energy. The ideal geezer rig is to get someone else to carry it, set it up, brew up a drink, drag your stinking hulk inside and check your pulse from time to time. Real dirtbags just don’t care a whole rip beyond that.Duct tape isn’t a bad choice, neither is a sat phone. Giving the choice between expensive a high tech toy or something any self-respecting hvac contractor will give away always go with the dirtbag way… kinda like the ray without soap.

Oh, yeah—I forgot he emergency platy of Jack Danials (wound sterization, sleeping aid and firestarter). That and duct tape has seen me through all disasters.

Larry–I admire your style. Cheers.

With the exception of a satellite phone…there is no risk analysis that can prepare you for the header on to a sharp rock…and probably a 1001 other accidents. Therefore hiking with a partner/s…and being careful when “applying” the excess Jack (or Wild Turkey in my case)is the best advice. Oh, and having an UL saw on your belt in case you get an arm wedged in a rock formation and can’t free it.
