i put 11th – 17th on the permit, but if we are good to go out via lamarck, we could out 16th or even 15th depending on pace & preferences

PostedJul 3, 2009 at 11:04 am

we can decide game day

my biggest concern is partial melt over steep talus/boulder areas – breaking through thin snow/ice and/or falling into a small hole or crack could be very bad in a number of visualized scenarios

also – if darwin canyon/lakes still frozen, i don't see the point; we will be close, though, and just after ice-out is probably best time for big goldens

and the ranger said route finding would be very tough until melt is close to normal summer conditions through the col

Richard, thanks for your offer. That is very generous of you. Dunno if we will need a few axes or not. Since your from our area, if you ever want to join us on our hikes, let me know.

been watching the Sierra weather reports and it has been quite hot up there. Cary here's to hoping that we have sufficient melt so that we can go through Darwin Canyon!!!

generally good, though these temps won't mean a super fast melt – hopefully the direct sun will have a strong effect on surface snow & ice: at that altitude, the UV is powerful

"My friend and I just day hiked to just below Lamarck Col yesterday (7-3-2009). There were three large snow fields to cross which we easily did up and down w/out axe or crampons. A little soft in some places and didn't see any ice. The snow extends from the lake to notch of the Col. We didn't go up to the notch at the col proper, but did see one backpacker coming down w/out axe. Many foot prints coming down the col from two notches. The snow is melting fast so at the end of July wouldn't think it would be much of a problem unless it's icy."

Hey Guys,

Looks like a great trip but I won't be able to make it. New Job and the 10th is partner's Birthday, so just too much going on. Cary, your mini-crampons are on their way, and don't forget to take lots of photos!

i'm thinking trout & pasta for one dinner, so you can plan accordingly

i think i'll bring one large pot we can share for boiling water & will use it for the pasta

i have a snowpeak canister stove we can all share – one should be good with a big pot for water, yea?

I have a snowpeak too. Should I bring a cannister?

Since I don't do chemicals, I can bring my hyperflow.

Bear Cannisters…I have 3

Cary Sat. morning…what time do you want me to pick you up. Email me your address.

Dave..Could you drive too???? We need a shuttle since this is not a perfect loop. Is that ok????
I am still leaning bringing my ice ax……

do you have a large cannister?

i'm thinking 2 large canisters would probably do it for the trip

small one. Could get a large if nescessary. I do cold breakfast's ala salami, cheese, nuts, things like that. The only time I boil is for dinner

Cary and Ken,

I can drive so we can shuttle. I will likely go over 120 to get to 395 since I am coming from the Central Valley. Perhaps one of you can suggest a good meet up location on the east side.

I have a large Bear Vault that I don't mind carrying.

Sharing a stove would great. I will bring a fuel canister and we can decide if we need it. I usually boil for breakfast and dinner but its all rehydrating food, not cooking.

I can dehydrate at least one meal to share that would complement a trout dinner. Does some combination of seasoning, vegetables and couscous sound okay?

I have purchased a telescopic rod and reel but I dont have any line on it. 2 questions: Is there a preferred type on line I should look for and would either of you be able to assist me with installing the line?

My email is davidwage@gmail.com

Dave, why don't we meet at the gas station on the right side on Hwy 120 that has a great restaurant. Man I forgot the name of it. It has a trapoline out front, and an amazing restaurant there too. It is at the intersection of Hwy 120 and Hwy 395. Maybe someone reading this will know the name of the gas station?

Thanks Jay! It is going to be tough. Heard that Muir Pass is snowed in at 11,500 and Lamarck is also going to be interesting.

how did the TRT go????? Since you had both you and Tony, I assume pics to follow??????

Thank you Cary for putting together the trip and Ken for driving and the companionship. This trip was equally entertaining and challenging and overall, my best hiking experience I have had. You two are both class hiking partners. Although my feet are in a world of hurt at the moment, I look forwad to the next trip.

Searching for the Col.
Lamark Col

Finally found it!

Don't be stingy with the photos, y'all! Been waiting to see what I missed out on….glad to hear you guys had a good time.

PostedJul 16, 2009 at 9:34 pm

you missed an awesome trip though. Ken & Dave – I can't thank you enough for helping me through my elevation sickness.

when i felt good, which was actually much of the time, this was the most incredible trip ever, largely because Ken & Dave were such wonderful and gracious trail companions, but i can't discount the sheer awesome magnitude of the beauty of this part of the john muir wilderness. also, we met and encountered some truly amazing individuals on this trip, including an apparent 2nd cousin through marriage of Dave's!

it was also some of the steepest stuff i've ever been on – lamarck col is much harder than shepherd pass.

i just got back & will post some pics tomorrow.
