I have found that anything with more than about 35% DEET works pretty well, the variations between brands seem to be more about how long it takes to sweat it off and the feel of the stuff than effectiveness when first applied. I do use a headnet, it saved my sanity last summer in the sierra when the bugs were heinous (mosquitoes on top of the 12,000 foot passes in the middle of the day). Mostly I use the net in the evening after I have washed up, so that I don't have to reapply DEET and go to bed with it on my face, and I don't have to eat with DEET on my hands or face. I don't think I could use the net while hiking unless it was truly desperate. T-shirts and baselayer type shirts do not stop the rascals, but wind shells do – I guess the weave is tight enough that they can't get their proboscis through it.

> Products for plants / pets are cheaper — but they're no good for bonding on clothing or gear.

>>Is there anyone other than Sawyer for permethrin made for clothing?

Not true. It is the same ingredient, just watered down drastically.

Yes there are other options besides Sawyer. Email me for my write up. I was told not to post it on another review site for possible legal concerns. I will talk to Ryan to see if I can share this openly as a MYOG or something. In the meantime,

Ask for the Permethrin write-up.
