To get back to the original post, you might consider the Thermojet. It has a similar setup to the Caldera Cone, but with a built in simmer ring. I've owned one for several years and I've been happy with it. It was the favorite amongst the stoves reviewers on this site, before the Caldera Cone came out.

I never had any luck with the "simmer ring" on the Thermojet, but the stove itself is a real rocket, and also works great in the Caldera Cone (but not for simmering).
I agree you should leave the legs on the FeatherFire. Also don't make the mistake I made when I first got the stove…I decided to try the simmering without a pot on it, and when I turned the cable the whole stove tipped over. Fortunately I was doing this in a roasting pan so the flaming fuel was contained, but it could have been ugly! FYI, I couldn't really see any difference in fuel use or cooking time with the pot supports left on, but it is harder to pack with them on.
This is a great thread. This was my feeble attempt at simmering some bobs red mill cereal last weekend. I'm going to try the simmer ring to try and snuff down the flame.
