>"6. I've chimed in too many times on these forums about TP, do whatever you want. But, you CAN go without…"

"I'm not that crazy!!!"

I have to say that, IMHO of course, sleeping on a 2 ounce pad is a lot crazier than going without TP! I have gone without TP on trips up to 5 days in complete comfort. I admit though that I was in heavily wooded areas with good natural TP. Not going to say anything more and risk starting that flame war again :P

1.Cut a piece of card stock that is 2.1 times the length of the blade and tall enough that it stops just below the metal fitted to the top of the blade.
Fold the paper lengthwise and glue it with small amount of glue at the end making sure it fits your blade but not too tight.
2.Cut a piece of pink, orange or yellow duct tape so that is wraps around the sheath top to bottom leaving the top open.
3. Cut a piece duct tape and wrap the sheath legthwise.
4.repeat step 2 then 3 one more time
5. If you want you can add a small piece of velcro on the top of the sheath to hold the blade in place. Shock cord works well too.
You will have a small blade that will be easy to find in your pack.
I like your list. I really like a pack with a frame and a bigger pad or a hammock but then I am not as young as you are and I have done my time sleeping on the cold hard grond and I have to say I don't like it. I use a something very close to your set up but with a hammock. I may post it one of these days if I feeling like being slammed for using a big comfy hammock :)

1. Cut a little envelope from a scrap of cereal box.

2. Use a little elmers glue to hold it together

3. Use a tab of duct tape to hold it closed.

I am not really sure. A few grams I guess. I have not made one for a while but the blade and the case should not be very heavy. Really I would not worry about it that much. It is better to be safe and comfortable than super ulatra lite. I really think many of these SUL gear lists are a joke. If anything goes south these guys have no back up. Like someone doing a 3 pound list and carrying all down on the AT in the rain. Not smart….. A razor is lite and really all you need in most cases. I like to have tools so I carry an SOG multi tool most time when I go out. Today I didn't and I went day hiking on the AT with just a 1000 UL pack and a water bottle. I carried no knife at all. Just for 3 or 4 days I take a neck knife sometimes or a multi tool on my belt if I expect problems. I am doing about 200 miles on the AT this spring/summer and I doubt I will carry more than a cased razor and something to spread Nutella and Jiff. The truth is I like my multi tool because of its saw I never really use the knife at all. The saw is nice to cut of sticks for a fire.

alright, Peter, I guess I don't really need the TP.

I'm gonna go with a Henie pot.

Cheers!

Also – my record is 35 days without store bought TP. Plenty of the natural stuff all around, all the time. And – I had a clean but when I came out of the mountains!

ARE YOU KIDDING ME, Timothy!?!?!?!

If you examine my (and many others!)list(s) properly, you should notice that i've got:

1.ALL my insulation (including sleeping bag!!!)is synthetic!!!
2.2 firestarters – bic and matches (Purrel also doubles as good tinder)
3.whistle AND light
4.good first aid kit

And besides that, you don't need much more!
If you learn to improvise and ACTUALLY KNOW YOUR STUFF, you don't need a full expedition kit!!!

I was not refering to your list in particular. I was just making an observation. I am aware that your load out is all synthetic. Mine in fact is not as I carry a pair of JRB quilts and this weekend I used both of them and my WM sleeping bag in my hammock. I wore a synthetic REI jacket and had some Montbell insulated pants with me as well. I am rather adverse to hypothermia having had it a few times in my young and stupid days I am rather paranoid about it now.
Oh and I know all of the tricks as I have been doing this stuff for 28 years. I was just pointing out that some of the SUL people are going too far and some of the things you have to do to cheat a bit in my opinion violate LNT rules more than I like. I will not use cut off tree limbs to make a bed or a shelter unless it is a real survival scenario. I sure won't do it to save a few onces on a sleeping pad. One of the reasons I like hammocks is they are more of a leave no trace option than anything else I know of.
