i use a aquamira frontier pro with antigravity gear bag, but am looking into a steripen. are there bottles out there that are lighter than nagelene that would accomodate the prefilter? i don't care for the bottles because they are heavier than platys.

The Nalgene wide mouth canteens are about as light as a Platy.
thanks P.P. guess i haven't picked one up in a long time. they were heavier at one time..
I love mine but the prefilter is too heavy….you can use a metal coffee filter and a bottle cap modified that saves some weight. But for 3.6 oz the pen gives you clean water in 30 seconds. And no bleach!
nate. would a metal canning ring work with a piece of mesh cut to size? or are you talking about cutting out the center of a cap designed for the naglene?
If a metal canning ring fits around the nalgene bottle…..I suppose it would work. I just use a nalgene cap with a hole cut into it. The issue with the steripen is you have to have an opening large enough for it to fit down into the water, so it pretty much limits you to the nalgene cantenes. Then just fit the filter under the cap so when you screw it on, it's held in place. You can get all the stuff you need at Walmart too.
I use a bpl 1100 cook pot. Then pour into my platty. If the water is murky I put a bandanna over the pot and pour water in with a cup. I don't use really murky water. The only problem is that the steripen doesn't take the "pond" taste out of the water.I really like mine. I've used it for the past 6 months on several trips and haven't had any problems. I've gone though 3 sets of batteries though. Maybe it's time for a rechargeable battery kit.

Joshua, I really like your idea. I'm surprised I did not think of using the cooking pot for that idea. At 1100 m, it's probably easy to figure out a liter — did you scratch in a line inside the pot to get the volume right?
Vicky, with the Steripen Adventurer, unlike the classic, you don't need to hold the container upside down. You can just stir the water with the Steripen upside down.
Most of the time in the High Sierra, water is so clear, that there is no need for any pre-filter so I doubt you'd need to hardly ever use the Bandana. How does it work when you so use it?
Ps, I've used a Steripen the last 3 years in the High Sierra now, the first year the Classic which broke down after 4 days (it was easy to get moisture inside the glass chamber which was fatal to it). No problems with the Steripen Adventurer other than having a battery die quickly because I packed it in such a way that weight depressed the power on switch and I did not have a spare battery and had to use iodine backup pills. I've learn to carry a spare battery now.
Hi Roleigh
Getting the volume of water exactly right is not that important. 'About 1 L' is fine – all these things have a safety margin.
Yep, I use my cooking pot too. Very easy with the Adventurer.
Cheers
I think what Victoria was asking was "are there bottles out there that are lighter than Nagelene", not a pot. I am looking for the same thing.
I use my MSR Kettle but would like to handle some water with out getting my kettle out.
There was a post on the forum about cutting a Gatorade lip and using duck tape- I tried it twice and couldn't keep it from leaking and worse it would leave glue on the SteriPen.
I hope someone has a UL drinking bottle that can be used on the go.
I made my own prefilter out of nanoseeum netting and some 1/8" shock cord. fits snug on the neck and pour the water through. Weighs .01 ounce Gonna make a larger one and try with coffee

Ken,
I did a similar filter with the noseeum netting but formed an enclosed net with an ounce of charcoal in there. Takes cre of any off tastes.
Charcoal can be purchased from aquarium shops.
