If you use a mesh bag for your Titan, then once you tightened the cord, the lid won't move around much (or at all) even if it isn't resting exactly on the pot rim.

Edit: Yes, David's idea of an elastic band will work too, may be even simpler.

Yup. That's what I meant about the elastic idea. There is enough of lid inside the lip of the Titan that if you had a way to cinch down the lid (mesh bag of even a heavy duty elastic band)… I think your be ok! Mesh bug might be the safer bet tho'. I'd guess that about 1/8" of the lid is inside the lip of the Titan with the Trappers mug inside.

Side cut the top of a large cat food can.
Carefully cut the tab off.
Invert.
Perfect fit!
Wt = 4 gm.

(If you want a lid with a vent hole then you can drill out the center of the rivet that holds the tab on and tab will fall off)

Actually, I found that if you bend the lip of the this lid toward the middle in a few places you will get a tight fitting lid that snaps on and off. You can adjust the amount of grip to your own needs.

Oddly enough… I was using the bottom of 5.5 oz cat food can for the lid on my beer can (also a perfect fit)… so I had an extra cans already kicking around in my box of stove tinkering stuff. Anyway, great discovery. My lid came in on my scale at 3 grams BTW! Wicked.

Hmm…well, close but not quite huh? I guess now I'll have to upgrade to the BPL SUL-900 pot to accomodate the mug. :) I do like handles on a pot, though, which the BPL lacks.

BTW, has anyone tried an UL homemade mug out of a beer or soda can? My only concern is cutting my lips whilst I'm sipping tea.

It fits enough that if you strapped the lid down with a heavy elastic band… it wouldn't move. But no… it doesn't quite fit.

As for the beer can question… that is a very popular option actually. Look back in this thread or do a Google search on "Beer can stove". You just need a side cut can opening to take the top off. This leaves the rim on the can… so you get a nice safe edge. Bear in mind that beverage cans have a Bisphenol-A coating.

Wait, I'm a little slow…Does the side-cut can opener cut along the SIDE of the can? If so, how is the lip retained? (I don't own a "side-cut" can opener). A pic would be helpful.

As for BPA…oh well.

It cuts through the top edge of the lip… to most of the lip is retained. They can be hard to find… but Good Cook makes one and a few others if you shop around.

Pop cans have too steep a slope from the lid to the body of the can. I have yet to find a side cut opener that will work on a pop can. Works fine on large beer cans like the Fosters and Heineken.

I'm just after a mug that will fit in my Titan, not a cookpot, so it can't be too tall. Will the beer can fit in the Titan? Another issue is that the beer can is heavier than a regular soda can, right?

Do you mean the MSR Titan Kettle? Pictured above in this thread? Clearly… no beer can or pop can will come close to fitting inside. That's a pretty small pot. I guess one of those mini pop cans would fit… but I'm not sure how you would get the lid off. If you look at the links I posted… you will see that the Heineken beer can is 29 grams. I don't know how much a pop can weighs.

As posted above… no… I have not found a side cut can opener that works on a pop can. The cutter just can't reach the lip. The 45 degree angle slope of the can from the lid to the body of the can gets in the way.

I'd say you have to do two things…

1. Use a "chubby" mini pop can (might fit)
2. Find another way to get the lid off

Mug that will fit inside MSR .85L Titan? I prefer Snow Peak's Titanium Single Cup I for its weight & durability.

Weight of the "Single Cup I" is 1.1 oz; capacity is 9.5 oz.

The "Single Cup I" has a handle, but one of the thin beer can cozies fits it well because the cup's handle attaches only at the cup's brim. Total weight of the "Single Cup I" wearing the cozy is 1.5 oz; and the cup fits OK in the Titan pot even with the cozy afffixed to the cup.

Another mug that fits in a Titan is an "Aluminum Drinking Cup" which can be seen at Brasslite's website — bottom of page at the following link:

Weight of the "Aluminum Drinking Cup" is 1.6 oz; capacity is 12 oz. Handle attaches at two points, so beer can cozy doesn't fit without modification of the cup or the cozy.

Lightest non-disposable "mug" that I've come across that can be stored inside a Titan is a plastic (polypropylene) measuring cup by Open Country that also works OK as a very small drinking mug so long as contents aren't "really" hot.

Weight of this plastic cup is .7 oz (per digital scale), and its capacity is 8 oz.

A fourth possibility is the GSI plastic cup that BPL has described in a short review recently:

The height of the GSI cup appears short enough to fit the MSR Titan (per BPL, cup height 2.95"). However, the cup's width (3.75" per BPL) doesn't include the handle. But, even with its handle, the GSI might still fit since the inside diameter of the Titan is a bit larger than 4.25".

Per BPL's review, weight of the GSI is 1.66 oz and the capacity is 12 oz.

I would also suggest the Fold-a-cup at 23 gms (0.8 oz), holds 1 cup and fits easily in a Titan Pot and handles boiling water without a problem, won't burn your lip on the edge, comes in really ugly colors, and are pretty indestructible.
