The bottom of the 32oz BFC energy drink can is almost identical in shape/size to the bottom of a 24oz Heine can.

I have two lids. Both unfinished. One weighs 9 grams and is just a lid. I'd use foil instead. The other makes an airtight, strong seal but weighs 16 grams as is. Sorry, not ready for prime time yet. [chuckle]

Did some *informal* tests w/the Trapper. Great mug. But i'm not sure it'll replace my 24oz Heine mugs due to the versatility they (heine) offer. No noticeable advantages/or disadvantages in re burn times using a few different alky stoves.

What I like best about the Trapper is that it is tough enough (imho) and very well made.

Now if were designing a Ti mug i'd make it much like the 24oz Heine can.

BTW, I always carry gloves or a bandanna so a handle is redundant.

Peace,

Richard.

Ryan Wrote:"I have a thought. What about fashioning two little "finger covers" out of closed cell foam – just a little covering to go over your thumb and first finger – just long enough to get to the first knuckle. Slip those bad boys on and grip the mug, pour the contents into your bag meal, and voila!"

That is a *great* idea! But I think i'd use silicone. I bet I have the materials lying around here somewhere. That would be a nice item to have when my bandanna is otherwise unavailable.

Side Issue: And that's a prob w/multiuse gear.

[lol] I know what you mean. Wait until you get yours. I think you'll love it. It's a cool mug!

Peace,

Richard.

Thanks for the info re: lid weight. I think I will go without and just use a cuban fiber stuff stack to keep items stowed inside the cup.

I agree re: pot design. I would LOVE to have a Ti pot that is about the same size / shape as the beer can. Basically a "Trappers" mug but an inch or so higher. But assuming I can get by on 12 oz of hot water for my meals… this mug should be awesome.

I too love the fact that this will be like a tank compared to a beer can. LOL. And at the risk of bringing up the contentions BPA issue… I do feel a lot better about not boiling water in a BPA containing container.

Hi David,

How do you tell if a Heineken can has BPA? Is is a plastic looking coating on the inside? I'm curious because I was checking out my Heineken can on the inside and it looks like plain aluminum. I have seen certain cans that have a white plastic like coating on the inside, but my heineken can, and also my fosters can looks like plain aluminum on the inside, unless it's got some kind of clear coating. These cans are probably 1 1/2 years old or so.

Hey Dan… I really don't want "go there" with this thread… but to answer your question… yes… the coatings are clear and ALL food and beverage cans have a coating. Not all coatings contain BPA… but the vast majority do. I don't know for a fact if the Heineken does or not. I'm simply assuming that it does. It's a safe assumption.

Whether it's harmful or not… I don't want to talk about. And I'm sure no one else does either. There's another LONG thread on here all about that if you want to discuss that issue. I was just saying that it WAS a factor for me in choosing the Trapper mug. Here is a pot that's not a whole lot heavier… is much stronger… and has no lining of any kind. Better safe than sorry :)

David,
Thanks for the info. I really didn't care that much about the BPA thing, but was curious if the can had some kind of clear coating, since I could not visibly see it.

Thanks.

Hey Daniel, Scratch the inside of the can with something sharp and you can see the plastic peel away from the sides.

I'm wondering what the difference in speed this cup boils compared to boiling water in a Snow Peak titanium bowl? Does anyone have these two items and can compare? My stove (which is similar to the gramweenie stove) seems to produce a wide flame and would be better suited for a wide pot (or bowl).

Hey George, nice pics! Was wondering how well the stove nest's inside the mug? I am seriously considering this purchase.

Thanks

Hi Jeff,

I just received my mug and stove yesterday and the stove nests inside the mug perfectly! In fact, there's enough room in the mug for my stove, foil windscreen, and folding ti spork! I think the total weight of all items including the mesh storage bag that the mug came with was right around 3 oz! I'll be trying the setup out this wknd and will post my results.

Ryan

Thanks for the insight, I also own a folding Ti spork. Any chance you think an esbit or two would fit as well?

Dont know why im still waiting to pull the triger…

Is there a way to get the BPA coating off the inside of beer cans?

Jeff,

I don't think you'd be hard pressed to squeeze an esbit or two in there at all. I'll give it a try tonight when I get home.

George, Thanks for the pics.

How do you keep that wind screen in place when its blowing hard?

Thanks
Jeff

For the pic, I used a new piece of foil.

In the earlier pic with the stove cooking is how I usually unfoil it and have some of the foil under the stove and rest covering a side. I use rocks and/or wood and/or legs when windy.

I made a .4 oz al flashing screen that looks good, but don't know if it would work much better. I'd hate to use a screen that weighs more than the whole kitchen : )

Fortunately, I've always managed to find a "calm" spot. I'm sure if it was too windy and there was no cover, then I would skip the hot water.

Hey All,

I hope this isn't too OT. Sorry if it is. I usually store my stove inside my pot so I can have it all nice and packaged up like that pic a couple posts above. Does everyone do this? The reason I ask is a few weekends ago after my water was heated up I noticed a type of film, or oily layer on top of the water – like when you are at a marina and there is gas floating on top of the water (although this wasn't all colorful). I figured it might have been from some Esbit tab residue from the stove that had gotten in the pot . I dumped the water out and filled it again and heated, but it still had some in it. So I mooched water out of my brothers pot. (NOTE: This was not out of the trappers mug. I haven't had a chance to try that out yet. I was using a Brasslite 600.)

Thoughts? Is it bad to store your stove in the pot?

I have never had an esbit or alcohol stove for that matter. I just got done reading the BPL articles on windscreens. I like the idea of tucking some under the stove (thanks for pointing that out George). I do not however notice holes cut in the bottom for a "draft". Do you have any numbers on your burn time, size tab you use?

Anyone else with this setup or just an esbit setup in general have any input on burn time, size tabs and amount used to boil say 12oz? Links to any esbit threads of interest?

Thanks
Jeff

Hi Ryan

Lord knows what's in those residues – nothing nice I wouldn't think! At the least you should wrap the stove up in a rag. Better to store it outside your pot.

Cheers

I've wrapped the stove in a sandwich baggie before. On my next trip, I'm wrapping the stove in my foil screen.

In my test, I used a 14 g Firelite tab to boil 12 oz water (room temp)

I blew out the tab and later boiled 8 oz water with remaining tab

um, yeah, so anyways, how about that Trapper's Mug ?

I got mine last week and took it on some walks. I really like the size for grabbing a quick sip on the go. It is short enough I can fill it up from most drinking fountains when passing through parks on training hikes. Size is perfect for a cup of soup. It worked okay for a dinner, but was a little short on volume for a hearty dinner, cooked in the mug. Not that it matters, but my brasslite stove nests inside perfectly, and I considered that a feature. It's deep enough to work with a steripen, again that was a feature for me, as the bowl I was cooking with before was too shallow.

I got my Trappers Mug last week! Very happy with it. It was smaller than I envisioned… but it should still be big enough for me needs. Since this thread had some discussion about the Trappers Mug vs. a Beer can… I thought I would post a comparison pic:

p.s. that wire handle thing is my custom addition… it doesn't come with the mug.

Does anyone know if the Trapper's mug will fit inside my MSR Titan pot? According to the specs listed on BPL, the Trapper's mug is 3.75" tall–so it won't fit in theory–but I was hoping someone with both of these items could confirm this. My MSR Titan mug fits nicely in my Titan pot, but it is 0.7 oz heavier than the Trapper's.

Maybe on it's side… but definitely not with it standing up. I own both and I'm pretty sure of that without even checking. I'm at work right now… but I'll replay again later with the answer and maybe a pic :-)

Sorry… doesn't fit. It comes surprisingly close however! The trappers mug is just 1/4" too tall to fit inside the Titan with the mug right side up. If you put it in upside down… you gain maybe another 1/16"… so it ALMOST closes. You get just enough of the Titan lid down so that it wouldn't move around if held on with an elastic band. Which might be an option. Here are some pics. The detail pic of the Titan was shot with the Trappers Mug inside… upside down (bottom of Trappers Mug against inside lid of Titan Kettle.
