are these waterproof or not? seems that about 90% of the threads I read say no they are not. I was thinking of using these as my pack liner, but if they don't keep my sleeping bag dry or clothes maybe I better not.

any opinions apreciated.

thanks

They leak. Stick with using a trash compactor bag. Cheap, easy, big enough for the whole pack's contents to be kept dry.

It would be neat to make custom sized liners from a mylar space blanket (doable since it can be heat sealed?) or from resizing a compactor bag (can that be done?) or painters drop cloth.

Does anyone know if seam sealing them will make them waterproof?

HI Adam,

>are these waterproof or not?

Absolutely not, I recently did a wet trip where I had do a chest high creek crossing and then spent the day walking throug wet srub, my Sea to Summit bag liner had quite a lot of water in it at days end, fortunately I had my sleeping bag and clothes in other water proof bags.

When I got home I filled the Sea to Summit bag liner with water and besides the silnylon itself leaking the seams leaked badly.

I can't speak for the people who have reported negative experiences, but I have not had these same problems. The Sea to Summit "ultra sil" liners are seam-taped silnylon and I've tested mine extensively both in a controlled environment and in the field, and for the year or so I've had it, it's not leaked. Keep in mind, silnylon has a low hydrostatic head and will seep water if you immerse it very deep, but for use inside a backpack (which has some water repellency anyway), I think it's great.

Since someone refered to custom sized bags: check out uline.com
They specalize in packaging stuff for companies. That's where we buy poly bags, boxes tape and such for our company but you'll also fine a few gems such as ziplock bags with built in bubble wrap in othersizes than BPL current offers as well as a huge variety of poly bags with different tops. These are a bit heavier than residential trash bags but could be purchased to fit exactly whatever pack you have.

I seam sealed mine and they still leaked.

I had a SS Ultra Sil pack liner (seam sealed) and inside that a Ultra Sil 20L sack (seam sealed). Still leaked at the bottom.
