I find this little water purifier intriguing. I'm also making the switch from plastic water bottles in the backcountry to the stainless steel Kleen Kanteens that I have been using at home for the past 4-5 years.

In watching Steripen's video demo though, I'm wondering if the narrow mouth (compared to the wide mouthed Nalgene in the video) of the Kleen Kanteen is wide enough to get the Steripen deep enough inside?

Assuming the Steripen fits, I'm also wondering if its lamp is strong enough to be tapping against the insides of the steel Kleen Kanteen? While in therory, the lamp wouldn't have to touch the bottles inside but with so little room in this case, I think it would be inevitable in such confines.

Any first hand input from Steripen users?

BTW. I'm aware of all my other purifying options so no need to suggest Aqua Mira or iodine tabs and such.:-)

Thanks.

With regard to the Adventurer it needs to have the UV light fully immersed in the water to operate. For me this means that narrow mouth bottles are problematic and as I do not have a Kleen Kanteen I cannot say whether it would work or not.

But have you thought about carrying 1 wide mouth container to for the Adventurer and storing the water in the Kleen Kanteen a pot would work.

I use the adventurer with a nalgene canteen and then store in a narrow mouth platypus for use during the day.

As above, Steripen works poorly with narrow-mouth containers. I had a phone conversation with the manufacturer once… trying to see if there's any good way of using the pen with my narrow-mouth Platypus containers. The answer was a straightforward negative.

I wish Steripen could manufacture an additional model with a longer UV tube. Sure, there's always the breakage problem, but hey, we manage to store long, thin, hollow tent poles without problems, right?

Someone is introducing a new line of Wide mouth light weight stainless steel water bottles very soon. These will be compatible with the Nalgene style screw caps. I have an email in to the manufacturer and will post an availability date when they contact me.

Measure the opening of your Kleen Kanteen. If the diameter is 1 5/8" or larger, The Adventurer will work for you. If it's smaller you'll have to use another container to purify and then pour the water into into your Kanteen. Assuming it fits, I wouldn't worry about tapping the sides of the Kanteen. It's not that fragile.

I use a rigid wide-mouth .5 liter HDPE Nalgene bottle kept shock-corded to a shoulder strap. The opening measures 1 11/16" and is just large enough so that you can stir the water while purifying.

Probably not as ideal but you could always look at the Aqua Star UV stuff. I know the original that uses the nalgene bottle has a narrow enough bulb yet long enough to work in many applications where the steripens might not. It barely does NOT fit in a platypus lid – it would if it didn't have the glow in the dark strip.

Perhaps even their Muv (Move) light would work, but I haven't tested it.

I use a 1.5L water bottle with the top cut off to scoop and purifiy the water with the steri pen, then pour the water into either a platy or some other water bottle. Nice thing about this is that the platy only receives clean water, so no stream water on the outside or around the threads.

The 1.5L cut water bottle is also a perfect place to store a caldera cone.

Hi Rusty

SS containers are so heavy! I use 1.25 L pop bottles for carrying water -about 30 grams each. VERY reliable too.

I use a 1.5 L Ti pot for cooking (for myself and my wife). I use this for treating water with the Steripen, and then pour the treated water into the pop bottle.

Steripen in Ti pot

The UV lamp has a hard glass protective cover over it. This can be bumped against the metal pot without any problems.

Cheers

You will need at least a 1 1/2" opening for the probes to have contact with the water. The adventurer body is slightly rounded and will just fit.

My steripen classic works fabulously in 32oz. gatorade bottles. The diameter of the mouth perfectly holds the steripen in place and I can rotate the steripen around in the water to cover alot of area. It all depends on mouth size.
