Beyond Backing – the book by Ray Jardine

Hi Jeremiah,
IMO you can find out pretty much all you need to know about hiking the AT, or any other major trail, right here at BPL.
Lots of very knowledgable folks with first hand experience and generous with their info. I had Jardine's book and sold it recently. There is some worthwhile info in it, but it definitely ain't worth $75. Again, IMO, you'd be a lot better off putting the bucks into gear or food. Good luck!

I just visited Amazon.com. Who are these yahoos trying to pawn off a used paperback for $75!?! One guy is actually asking for $152!

Yeah, I know, supply and demand — yaddy yaddy yadda — but I just 'hate' that mentality.

Jeremiah — I find the book quite informative and well written. I have a copy that I purchased used right here on this forum. It's in pretty darn good condition. If you want, you can have it for $15 plus $5 postage and mailing. Heck of a lot better than $75. All I ask is that if you ever decide to sell — you agree to sell to other hikers at no more than cost. PM me for my email address if you are interested and are in agreement.

I checked the book out from the library, read it, learned a few things, and returned it, my wallet still intact. I would not spend $75 on it.

Yes- it is. But more so as a historical piece and a reference of where we came from.

But if you want to have a book of what's happening now, I'd recommend the combination of Ryan Jordan's book at Lighten Up. The combo is perfect and a better use of your cash.

But later, do add Beyond Backpacking to your library. I have my Golite Breeze pack and this book for ultralight historical record. :-)

Unfortunetly i live in Indiana…and not a popular place for long distance hiking, so the book is nowhere to be found in our local libraries. Thanks though.
