Just thought I'd share something I discovered last year that's made me happy Fox river silver antimocrobial liners with defeet woolie boolie socks has been working amazing for me. On my last trip I didn't take my socks off for 4 days!! (Just being lazy) When I finally did they didn't smell!!! I tried multiple combos of smart wool, darn tough, wigwam, and even these weird silver treated thick wool socks I found….all failed the test. Something about the defeet/fox rivers just works for me. Maybe the defeet wool kills whatever stinky bacteria the fox river liners don't get? Now if I can only solve my stinky underwear issue….oooffff

I wash my feet every night. Plain Darn Tough socks works for me. Glad you found something that works for you. Käsefüße
Thank you Christopher. I'm a bit surprised at the Fox River silver liner socks, as if they are the ones i'm thinking off, they have 60% polypropylene which is the stinkiest fabric there is. But the 19% silver treated nylon content should help to significantly minimize odor due to microbial waste byproducts. Probably would work even better if the rest of the content was nylon, or wicking, polygiene treated polyester. I have some all nylon, thin socks without any silver treatment, and they aren't too bad in the odor department, though not as good as my wool or linen socks. Probably nothing particularly special odor wise of the Defeet wool socks, but probably more a combo of the X static, thin quick drying liner socks with the wool on the outside. You probably could use other wool socks on the outside with similar results as long as you're using a similar liner.
Try Ibex merino indies… And maybe washing 'em every once in a while ;-)
Haha yes I should wash my feet more. I just get lazy about it if I'm doing a lot of miles and/or its cold out. I've noticed big differences in wool anti stink properties on socks and baselayers. Not exactly sure why this happens. Here's my experience: -Patagonia: ok at odor, dries slower, feels soggier. -Smart wool: dries faster, not much odor resistance. Ok durability. -ibex: excellent odor resistance. Not as durable. Dries ok, feels a little soggy when wet but not bad. -defeet: excellent odor resistance, durable, dries decent, doesn't feel very soggy when wet. -io bio: Smells weird when wet. Durability lacking, odor resistance not so great. -Ice breaker: ok odor resistance, durable, feels soggier when wet and takes the longest to dry. -darn tough: Not very good with odor, doesnt seem to feel too soggy when wet. The most durable I've seen. -Rei wool socks: failed me in all categories.
I imagine the difference is not so much in the wool itself as regards odor, but in the proportions and types of synthetics that are blended in to increase strength and durability. A near all wool sock, is going to have better odor reduction properties over time than one with say 25% polyester, or 40% nylon for example. Then polyester is stinkier than both acrylic and nylon, acrylic stinkier than nylon. And nothing is as stinky as polypropylene. Dry times relate to thickness and density of material, and again proportion of and kinds of synthetics blended.
