I'm realizing that my current alcohol-based cooking setup is about 9 ounces and I'm tempted to try Esbit for short one or two night trips. I'm not ready to commit to the price of a Caldera Cone setup at this point. Massdrop has the 550ml Toaks Ultralight Esbit system for $47 including shipping. It's listed as 4.4 ounces and I like the idea of losing 4.5 ounces for $47. Any thoughts on the Toaks setup? FWIW, I'm not interested in a Foster's pot based setup…

I have used a nearly identical system (though not Toaks' branded) for years and I think $40 is a steal. That size pot is perfect for me.
It'll work. My current setup uses a 550ml pot (Helion brand) with an esbit system. I've used the wing esbit stove before with no complaints. I've never found a use for sporks but maybe your food choices make one useful. The 4 stuff sacks are pretty funny but that may just be me. Like with any gear, field test it, make changes that fit your personal style and use it until something else comes along that calls your name.
I totally agree that the stuff sacks are funny (hopefully they are included in the 4.4 ounce weight because I definitely don't need more than one of them). Agreed on the spork as well. I'm a spoon guy and my local ice cream shop has the wonderful disposable ones that are 6 grams and durable.
Yeah I only use one stuffsack for my kit. Sporks suck….sell it for a few bucks or trade it for a folding spoon.
I was looking at the same setup when I found this on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/Helion-Ultralight-Titanium-550-ml-Cook-Pot-/271977986067?hash=item3f5326b813 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Helion-Ultralight-Titanium-Wing-Stove-/281778833472?hash=item419b53c840 Same setup sans windscreen and together they are $32.90. I already have windscreens lying around so I decided to pull the trigger on these this morning.
I picked up the kit on Massdrop a while back. It's my first esbit system. It's hella light, but the widescreen is something to be desired. My buddy has a caldera cone set up, while it weighs more, it's super quick. I might be picking up a cone
I'm happy with Esbit, especially for short trips. I had it along as emergency backup for my alcohol rig and forgot the alcohol. Now it's my go to for overnights. I picked up the Esbit tri-wing on amazon and didn't like how it packed down. I prefer an esbit holder that fits inside a small Ziploc with the fuel tabs. If course you then need a separate stand I'll take a pic later to show you what I mean. It's easy to use stakes to make a stand with your windscreen. BTW,the aluminum cones are reasonably priced, but don't pack down small. FlatCat gear has a nice setup with their Snow Leopard. I just got a SS version, but have yet to field test it.
For you REI shoppers their Tri-Wing is on sale in the outlet. REI Tri-Wing Stove
I am pretty sure that TOAKS derived this set up from the original LiteTrails system (now closed). It was a pretty popular kit that had a lot of converts. LiteTrail
Clockwise from the top. Esbit tri-wing, trail designs gram cracker, Zelph esbitimizer, flatcat gear Epicurean TI UL15, early BGET from Zelph, with a Zia stand. I've used the Gram Cracker with a Caldera Cone. It's the most compact to pack. I've used the Epicurean with the cone too, and it can be used to bake. Here they are side by side with the tri-wing
Here's a shot of the Caldera Cone packed in a Snow Peak mini solo pot and the Snow Leopard Jr packed in a Toaks 650 light. The Caldera Cone Inferno handles wood fires, but that set is 8 oz vs 6 oz c including one Esbit tab.
Of course the pot is part of the difference.
I have the Lite Trail kit that Jon posted a link to above. I have other kits that I use but it's my go-to cook kit for trips where I want to keep weight/volume to a minimum but still want a hot meal at the end of the day. I can't recommend the 550ml mug enough, regardless of whose branding is on it. It's the perfect size to boil two cups of water without having boil over.
I purchased the set through the drop. I'm looking forward to trying out this stinky, sooty solution. It must be great if so many people are willing to deal with the stink. I'm sure it will not be the end of the road for me and cooksets. I'll churn through it like every other solution I've found. I'm already thinking about trying it with a Brian Green stove and a Starlyte from Zelph.
