I'm curious–why do you think that the SilNylon bathtub floor of the bivy is insufficient to keep you dry?

I've never been to Alaska, so I'm not quite sure what you'll be facing, but in the Sierra, the bivy + tarp has always been sufficient for me–no groundsheet needed.

Dave: The bottom of my bivy is cuben. But if water gets inside the tent it would not be hard to get past the bivy. The bivy will likely provide all the protection I need. It's just not as secure as a bathtub floor.

Adam: My setup is fine for the Sierra, and thus 80-90 percent of my trips. When I was in Alaska last August, I had one stretch of 24-hour rain, nearly nonstop. I had one night when I set up late on a ridge and my Fly Creek and my sleeping bag got wet. Poor site selection, but little options in a storm. That had nothing to do with gear.

It looks like Sturka used the same setup I have – MLD Solomid and bivy. I'll be the first to admit he's tougher than me.
