Okay, does anyone actually like built-in liners in their shorts? When I was a kid, a mesh liner implied men's swim trunks. Now it's almost impossible to find athletic shorts without a liner. I like merino underwear. I like capilene underwear. I appreciate that companies like Ibex and Patagonia have put a lot of work into designing underwear that fit well, are seamless, don't chafe, etc. I've never met a sewn-in mesh brief that was as comfortable or well-constructed as real underwear. It's a pain to cut them out, and I dislike buying something brand-new and having to hack it up myself.

The Patagonia Trail Chaser shorts seem nice, but it appears they've discontinued the women's version. I keep going back to Baggies (the women's model is unlined) despite the weight penalty because they have good pockets and last almost forever. Any good sources for unlined running shorts? Half the price of p-gucci would be appreciated…

Agree on no liners for me.
I don't like the way they feel, they're always a bit too loose to keep everything secure – and I like to wash my actual underwear more often than my shorts.

Haven't seen any shorts that I like without liners.
So, I just cut them out – takes me a minute or two.

I have a pair of Ex-Officio pants (like new from a thrift store) that are great pants, but have a mesh underwear liner that I don't really care for. Not that big a deal, but I prefer my own underwear, or going commando.

If they didn't include liners, people who like liners wouldn't buy them. People who don't like liners can cut them out. Easy to see why they do it.

I'm just surprised how hard it's become to find unlined shorts–they seem to have reached a point of marketplace domination. I still have some old running shorts (from at least a decade ago) and they're just simple, super light, no-frill shorts. I'll be sad when they bite the dust. I've seen a few people hiking in soccer and basketball shorts recently because they find them more comfortable. I met a lot of women on the PCT this year who have ditched their running shorts in favor of those stretchy black short-shorts (think Under Armor) in order to solve chafing issues. I'm a big fan of skirts, too–many fewer fit issues than with shorts/pants.

Running shorts by definition have a "liner." It's really an inner layer that replaces "underwear" so that the inner short moves with the outer short as a system, is lighter, eliminates chaff, etc. Not usually mesh, except in really cheap ones. It's usually supplex nylon.

Maybe you should consider an other athletic short that does not have an inner brief, like soccer or basketball shorts, rather than trying to find a pair of running shorts without one.

You can't get an athletic skirt that doesn't come with shorts inside, either. Even athletic skirts that are long enough not to need them.

I simply cut the liners out of running shorts. The liner fabric doesn't fray after you cut it. If you're careful, you can preserve the little pocket when you cut. I wish running shorts had an actual pocket on the outside. I'm thinking maybe I will sew one one, just a small one. I usually only carry hand sanitizer, chapstic and a small knife.

What I don't get is why are some running shorts really super poofy in the front? Is there anything I can do to make them flat in front like other shorts?

'Target has unlined running shorts by Champion for $9.99 today my local store."

That's what I use for running. They even have "outside" pockets. :^)

I like compression shorts ( flyless so the dont look like underwear) for underwear, keeps ticks out of the nether regions.

I have carried 1.9 oz nylon shorts to wear over for modesty around some people. ( cut out liner) I dont hesitate to just hike in the compression shorts, because no one cares really.

I'm a liner guy all the way. To each his own. My only beef is that the elastic on the legs of most liners does not last nearly as long as the shorts do.

It's probably a good thing men like the liners. I remember too many unwanted "conversations" with men in running shorts back when I was younger and prettier. They didn't line running shorts back then.

"…I wont waste extra time making it shorter….?"

Sure but you WILL take the extra time to needlessly comment negatively to someone helping another out….. why, why, why?

Did the poster ask for help in how to shorten links?

Why?
Because I felt like being the A-hole that called him out on it. Just like I call out people that cut in line anywhere, cant stand it.

Back to original topic…….

I switched to basketball/workout shorts. Very thin, I like that they are longer and very stretchy. No liner and the ones I have are reebok and have a very heavy duty elastic waste and while they provide a draw cord, I dont find a need for it. Plus it has pockets :)

So, for folks using knit polyester shorts, how well do they held up? Do you have issues with the fabric snagging a lot?

Dale — I like the look of those ultimate shorts and wish they were about 5 or 6 inches shorter! What I really like about running shorts is the short inseam coupled with the deep side slits. Great range of motion. I have large legs relative to my waist, so shorts that fit well in the waist are often tight and restrictive in the hips/thighs.

PS – I think the issue with the above links was just that they're so long it's almost impossible to copy/paste (I tried) due to the way they get displayed by BPL (or by one's browser? I don't know). Anyway, a link is only useful if you can follow it… BPL really needs a user-friendly link button, but that's a topic for another thread. :-)

I've found Marmot shorts, (which I think are discontinued) that have a built in compression liner. I hate mesh liners, but love these shorts. They also have 3 pockets.
