They certainly do. I was at the Cotton Wood Lakes Trail Head in 2010 (near Lone Pine on the 395) and was greeted by a parking lot attendant that was warning all folks leaving their cars to remove anything with a smell and put in in one of the state-sponsored big bear boxes. A few weeks before a bear tore a car apart getting into the trunk for motor oil.
Seen plenty of videos via email in past years of bears breaking into cars but don't remember the specifics of what state or states. Though bears may not be breaking into cars in other states, a car with nice smelling food has got to be pretty tempting to a bear, especially if they are very hungry. And they are plenty strong so they can do it if so inclined.
