I am faced with both of these fine products on sale (40%off!) at my favorite shop. But I cannot decide which is going to suit my needs better. I ant a wind shirt primarily to be breathable and provide protection from snow. I usually wear goretex in the rain. I read somewhere that the MB is not very breathable. Anyone have experience or advice?
This one's easy: the MontBell UL wind jacket is not marketed as breathable — and it isn't. Ryan Jordan calls it 'sauna fabric'. That should settle your 'dilemma' right there.
No direct experience with the Ether, other than reading positive feedback on it overall (hopefully actual users will add their comments).

I totally agree with Ben. All windshirts are compromises; they're either on the more breathable or more water resistant side of things.
I have the Ether and the hoodless Montbell wind jacket. The Ether is much more breathable, but a little less water resistant.
If you want a jacket to wear under a small poncho tarp or an umbrella, or something that you can push into wetter conditions, the Montbell is your choice. If you want a more breathable choice that you'll carry in addition to a full rain jacket, go with the Golite.

I have used both, and Doug is exactly right. Choose the ether for better breathability and the MB for better weather protection. The MB has a 100 wash DWR and I believe the ethers is about a 50 wash. The MB is a ripstop the ether is not so the MB might be a little tougher. I personally prefer the ether because I like the fit and want something that breathes better.

Are you the guy I ran into in Olympic this summer? You were headed out to Sol Duc after not finding a place to camp up at the High Divide (I think that's what it was). I was thru hiking the PNT.
I don't even know why I'm asking. Your post is about Port Townsend, the coincidence would be TOO GREAT to NOT be you. Good to see you're alive and posting occasionally. I ended up hitch hiking from the end of the trail all the way to the train station in Everett so I didn't get a chance to stop back in PT to check out y'alls nifty little gear store.
How'd your trip down to… what was it… the Picketts go?
