AirLight Seat

We're bringing this ultralight backpacking seat to market in June of 2015 and are looking for feedback. Please take a second to see more info on the product as well as a video we shot for it on our website here:

http://www.adventureinstincts.com/survey

We are looking for feedback on pricing specifically if you'd please answer the survey on the page too.

Thanks in advance and we look forward to opening up some conversation.

Yours Truly,

Adventure Instincts

Looks interesting. I'd like to see what you've used for the inflation/deflation valve.

Justin,

I love the concept, provided it won't leak!!!! The product looks good and comfy. Nice video.

I'm ok with careful site selection for an inflatable, but I have visions of those gray $7 inflatable travel neck pillows that last a few uses. Sounds like the materials are up to the task; hopefully the seams and valve will be too.

If this will last for years, I'm probably in. Around $25 maybe?

Definitely looks interesting. Don't be dissuaded by people who claim chairs are silly when you can sit on stumps and rocks.

If the durability and price are good, I'd buy two

Interesting idea… what are the inflated dimensions?

PostedMay 11, 2015 at 4:49 pm

how much does it weigh without the dry bag? I assume the dry bag is for storage only and not necessary for use.

Also, what shape does it have when only, say, a quarter inflated? I'm wondering if it could double as a pillow for us side sleepers.

I like where you're going with this. It looks like a big improvement over my Thermarest Lite Seat at 4 ounces. Being an older backpacker with health issues; I really like my Heliox Ground Chair because of the seat back; but the 23 ounce weight is a bear. This may be a nice compromise.

If the price is right and the durability adequate, I'd probably get one. I am a bit concerned by the valve — it may be sufficient, but it reminds me of a cheap beach ball.

What's the weight without the stuff sack? I'd probably not carry that anyway.

I completed the online survey — good luck with this new venture!!!

I think the only place I'd blow it up is base camp. I would still have to find a backrest. I think I would end up leaving it home or neglecting to use it, if I did bring it. Nice product. Limited market.

Maybe build in a little loop or something to the bottom so you can stake it down?

that thing looks like it will to catch the wind and roll away when you stand up

Seems like a cool product and there have been discussion on BPL about seats before.

One thing I noticed….if it is waterproof, why a 'dry' bag? May be able to shed a few ounces with a different sack.

Either way, I would like to take one along with me on my next trip since I can only squat, not sit cross legged.

Looks like a pretty good idea. I would be concerned about stability (some air pillows make your head roll off – not sure how this seat works) and it blowing away.

Have you thought about a half-height version? Maybe it would be a little lighter, a little smaller, and would be easier to use as a pillow at night. But maybe then you are encroaching on the other inflatable seats (like the Thermarest Lite Seat).

Very interesting. I completed your survey and will keep an eye out for what you eventually bring to market.

I currently have 3 "chair options". Which is carried depends on trip specifics. From lightest to heaviest:
1. NeoAir mattress semi-inflated and rolled up inside Exped Schnozzle. This replicates the NeoAir Jembe Seat Kit and I imagine the Airlight would function very similarly if at a reduced height. Weight: 0 oz. (multiuse of items already carried).
2. Therm-a-rest Lite seat. Weight: 3 oz
3. Helinox Chair 1 – Pure awesomeness but at a 2 lb cost :(

I could see the Airlight supplanting option 2, but it really doesn't replicate the functionality of the lite seat. Heck, maybe it would make a better option 2.5

Thanks for your feedback!

We've picked this material feeling confident it will stand up to the test of the outdoors. We've also taken it on several trips and it's performed well.

Just so you know, we're offering 100 of these up for sale on June 2 and taking reservations for those 100 spots. You can reserve yours here: http://www.adventureinstincts.com/gear

Thanks for the feedback James. The last time I went camping and sat on the ground all weekend, I came home with a tick! So, I agree with you there :)

Not my jam, but I think there is a market out there. For me, it looks too much like sitting on a beach ball. I'm not sure I would have the energy at the end of the day to stay upright on one of these. But, my wife would love to have something like this along. She currently carries a Monarch chair and this looks like it would be lighter and just as comfy for her.

Great questions Doug,

The dry bag alone is .8 oz
The seat alone is 6.2 oz

I have take a picture of myself using the seat at 1/4 inflation as a pillow as well as the seat by itself:Using AirLight Seat as PillowAirLight Seat at about 1/4 inflation

I'm not surprised there has been some discussion; that's good to know. Having a seat in the woods is something that shouldn't take up much room in the pack.

Hmm, good thoughts on the dry bag. We wanted to be able to carry the seat outside the pack in any weather and have a completely dry seat when you decide to settle in for the night. The weight of the dry bag itself is .8 oz.

Good thoughts John. This is exactly the kind of feedback we're looking for. It's quite stable when you're sitting on it.

I just checked out that Thermarest Lite Seat. That's about as minimal as it gets! Surprising to see it's going for $30…

But, making the AirLight Seat smaller is a solid thought. Thanks again for sharing!

Really solid feedback John. I like how you broke it down by weight and trip details.

Option 2.5, I like it. The Helinox is a seat we've studied closely. It really is pure awesomeness but that weight and pack down size are a deal breaker.
