Any suggestions for a (the best) Labor Day trip in the U.S. I have Thursday night through Monday flying out of Atlanta. So probably 3-4 days of hiking with Friday morning and most of Monday dedicated to travel. Hiking around 10 miles per day. Will only have one rental car so it needs to be a loop or a reservable shuttle. Less crowded is a big plus. Looking for something cooler top, nights at least dropping into the mid sixties.

Currently thinking top half of the lost coast or maroon bells around aspen (sure that will be packed though). Maybe wind river range? Anything in Oregon, Washington, or Idaho fit this description? Never made it to those states. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Labor Day can be busy.

You could go around North and Middle Sister. About 35 miles. Check out http://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guide/Trail_around_Three_Sisters_Hike. The trail between Middle and South Sister is really nice, but unmarked, so read about that carefully to know where to go.

Maybe something in Goat Rocks, but that can be even busier. Check out http://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guide/Goat_Lake_Loop_Hike. Goat Lake loop is only 13 miles, but you could go North on Lily Basin trail, or up to Old Snowy, or over to Cispus Basin to get your 10 miles a day.

"Cooler" is mid 60s???? Remind me to stay out of the Southeast : ) Might get down to 40 F or even freezing.

Not the Lost Coast unless you stay up on the ridge way above the beach. It' the beginning of the season and after HSU graduation and it will be so busy you might not find a place to camp as that happened to me a couple of years ago. Most of the campgrounds here open on June 1 and people head out in droves looking for sun here.

Ken, I think you're confusing it with Memorial Day.

Labor Day should have great weather along the Lost Coast–best of the year–but it is also a busy holiday weekend for a lot of people, because it's the "last" weekend of the summer. But in California schools start in mid-August these days, and we've had good luck hiking on Labor Day, particularly if you can get one more day off. If you start a day early you can avoid just about everyone who does a three day trip over the weekend.

One concern about the Sierra is certainly water this year. No idea if any of the streams will be flowing after such a dry winter.
