Hello,
I would like to get a solar lamp. I have read the threads here and you guys seem to like both the LuminAid and Luci. Both companies have different models of these lights though. Which one(s) would be the most suitable for backpacking? Also do you get enough light from them to set up a tent at night? This would be my main purpose for buying them and also having some light in the camp after sunset will not hurt either.
Here are the links to both:

Anything else that might work as well?
Thank you.

I got the Luci outdoor model, with three light levels/functions. Works great, enough light to see in a small area. Instead of having to bring my Coleman lantern close to my tent when car camping, I can just bring this inside my tent and leave the bugs outside. I used it last weekend for the first time at a small Coleman campout. The light shines down like a lantern of course, so if you could suspend it by its loop, that would be best, I had mine laying on its side some. Can be used to read with also, so no lantern fumes or extra heat, although a gas lantern would be nice when it is colder for the heat. I'd like to get the smaller version sometime.

I have the Luci Lux. I like it. Clip it to the top of my pack to charge while hiking. I think mine was 4.5 oz total. Certainly not required but lighter than a candle lantern.

Thank you Scott and Duane,
I assume that you both got enough light from your particular models to set up a camp/tent at night if necessary?

Luci Aura here. 110g counting a small loop of cord to hang it by.

Plenty of light to set up at night – we were using it at Girl Scout camp a couple weeks ago to light a dining area for 8 people. I like being able to have light other than white as well. Girl Scouts liked the "it can't make up its mind" color cycle setting, though I find that pretty distracting.

I find it's good for about 4 hours of light from a day's charging. You do have to remember to leave it out in good light to charge. When it dies, it dies pretty suddenly.

Pretty sturdy & waterproof.

Still waiting for my preordered LuminAid Packlite 12. :( In case you were looking for something more immediate.

New LuminAid has now twice the wattage. Lighter and longer run time than the Luci. They do lantern designs also if you only plan on using at tables or what not.

I found the Luci light to be pretty good. I returned to the store and purchased a few more to use as gifts.

I have the luminaid 16 and it provided enough light for the interior of a rei kingdom 6. I don't know if I would have wanted to set up the kingdom tent in the dark with only the luminaid, but I think I would have no problem setting up a tarptent with just one.

There's also a new one on kick starter, the solarpuff. I am a little confused as to how they are related to luminaid, but it seems the original patent includes everybody. Benefit I see from them is that there is no need to inflate.

The luminaid takes some hard breathing to fill it. I'm not sure if I am doing it wrong? Or if that's just how it is. Will have to play around with it some more.

I have one of these and it is great. Good light on low and plenty of light on high. It actually recharges the next day. I am not sure if it gets a full charge, but enough to cover a few more hours the next day. I haven't used it backpacking yet so I can't comment on how well it charges hanging on a pack.

I received a Luci Outdoor light a few weeks back and love it! I was also in between getting either a Luci and LuminAid. After reading reviews and watching some videos the Luci won out. It's brighter and floods a larger area with light. You can also hang it upside down and have a nice bright spot to gather around for reading maps at a table or in a tent.
