I've been meaning to get up to Enchanted Valley in Olympics to see bear. Schedule and weather finally aligned.

About 0.1 mile above cabin, walked around corner and bear was 30 feet away. Got up on tree and started huffing at me:

As I backed away, it got back on ground and watched me leave:

One other person said he had exact same experience. The other two groups I passed said they saw bear(s) but I didn't bug them for details : )

I think that bear does the same thing for many people each day. Must get entertainment scaring humans? Or park ranger wearing bear suit?

There were several people camped there. They seemed to be using bear wire.

Your link said no camping above Pyrites Creek which is about 3.5 miles below Enchanted Valley. That's where I camped. Then hiked up to Enchanted Valley during the day.

Enchanted Valley didn't seem like that great a place to camp. Wide open meadow so no privacy from others. And then there's those bears wandering around…

Cool. Been a little bit since I've seen one.

Did see Bigfoot in the local park. OK, it was a guy in a suit smoking a cigarette. Told him I hope he didn't get shot.
