Looking for one pair of shorts for upcoming JMT. Must be quik dry, have drawstring but, not shorty-short and not look like basketball shorts. Please reply with any ideas you may have.

I have the Arcteryx Incendo shorts and recommend them if they are still available. They are lightweight and quick drying.

Any of the surf brand style boardshorts could fit the bill.

I'm partial to some of the Patagonia options. Burly material, quick dry and offered in several different cuts/lengths.

Pair with boxer briefs and you're all set.

Finding the ideal shorts my condundrum too. My favorites are a very old pair of lined nylon fishing/water shorts with the right amount of pockets and 6" inseam (about ideal for my taste. They have a draw sting and also belt loops. My suggestion is to look at water/fishing shorts. I've also use a pair of Nike training shorts with a 7" inseam and two front pockets. Training/exercise shorts are another area to look at.
The condundrum part of the equation for me is that I like a zippered fly and a liner. LL Bean makes a short to fit the bill but the pair I have are a light color that really shows the dirt in short order.
Actually LL Bean has a nice variety of shorts that might work for you:

Depending on your style of taking care of business the drawstring feature, which also usually means no fly, can be a nuisance but your milage may vary.

Big +1 on Patagonia Stretch Wavefarer (the Minimalist has a 19" outseam, instead of the 21" of the Stretch). They are my favorite shorts. However, I do use 5" running shorts often, deciding on the shorts based on weather and what else I might be taking.

The downside is that they are expensive but they can occasionally be found on sale.

Edit: *outseam, not inseam. Thanks, Anna!

the out seam is 19" not the inseam( out seam is measured on the outside of the short from waist to the bottom of the short )

These: http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/37360?feat=908-GN1&page=supplex-classic-sport-shorts-8-inseam

and these if you want more pockets: http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/36414?feat=908-GN1&page=supplex-cargo-sport-shorts-6-inseam

Fabric nearly indestructable. I wore out the liner elastic eventually on one pair but not the shorts themselves. Have been hiking in the same pair for 8 years, no signs of wear even. They even have a choice of inseam lengths.
