Which material would you recommend to drape over a mid, tarp tent or lightweight tent to reduce inside heat when using the shelter for shade in very sunny hot midday weather? Think midday desert, summer.

Aluminized mylar space blanket?

Aluminized sil?

Sil?

aluminized sil isn't all that reflective

space blanket good

anything white would be pretty much just as good

if you had anything, including a black sheet or a tree in between you and sun with air space between, it would be about as good

Thanks Jerry, tree or mountain shade would be great – only need this for terrain with no shade whatsoever, for a rest break in the hottest part of the day.

That's what I thought would work the best, and already have one.

I'd like to secure a few light cord loops on the edges – which tape would be strongest?

doesn't need to be very strong

space blanket probably won't last long before it rips

clear plastic packing tape? duct tape?

Or just not bother with a Cuben shelter as the weight of the two will add up.

Unless you have a Cuben shelter already.

AMK Heatsheet blankets are polyethylene and hold up better than Mylar and the material would be easier to tie lines onto.

For rest stops, and umbrella is handy, but falls out of the SUL category with a thud :)

My tyvek sublite tent is a super shade shelter. Never gets hot inside.

Just pitch that mid higher and open up the one side all the way. Another reason why I went with the brown, more shade. i use one of the AMK blankets as a groundsheet so if I had to use something I guess I would use that.

That version is almost half a pound.

this is the one I was talking about and Dale too.

By aluminized mylar space blanket, I meant the 2P AMK Heatsheet 3.2 oz – it's the only one I have. I've have one that's been unfolded and folded for years and still going strong.

I'd like to add just a few cord loops to the edges to fasten to hold to the top of a shelter.

Ken good idea about opening up one side of the mid. I also like the darker colors for stealth and shade – not a fan of light gray sil.

I remember John Abela using a Heatsheet for a ground cloth too. Certainly lighter than tyvek, even kite tyvek. Does it hold up pretty well as a ground cloth and does it add any warmth warmth from reflecting heat back at you? I'd imagine the heat reflection from the ground is pretty minimal.

That's the one. Holding up good so far. Mind you that the lettering will get scrubbed off by snow and leave you wondering where all this black stuff is coming from.
