Hi,

Somebody is helping me make a backpack – for the zips, we ordered some of the Riri Aquazips from here (Pacific Trimming):

However, apparently if you hold it up to the light, you can still see gaps between the teeth.

Surely that's not normal right? Is the above zip the correct waterproof Aquazip that everybody refers to?

Or is this somehow not an issue?

Regards,
Victor

The things I have with waterproof zip have all been plastic coil type, not metal toothed. I cannot see light between the teeth.

have you zipped it up and tested it for leaks?

The zipper could have some sort of hydrophobic coating on it to prevent water from getting through…if nothing else you could also buy a spray can locally and try sealing it up yourself. (It's called Rust-Oleum NeverWet…sold at most hardware stores and Walmart)

I've used uretek zippers and they seem to work quite well. I'm really curious what price you paid for your zipper because it looks like it's $32 for a 36" strip according to their site but there's no way that can be right…what I've bought cost around 1/10 that price:

http://www.questoutfitters.com/zippers.htm (look for 'URETEK')

I'm not 100% sure (since I'm at work and can't check right now) but I'm confident the uretek zippers don't have any gaps and are plastic, continuous coils.

Yeah, I've used the Uretek (or YKK Aquaguard) zippers before – they come in both a coil and molden (Vislon) version, I believe. I've only used the coil version.

However, I found them to have quite a lot of friction.

These Riri Aquazip's are meant to be completely waterproof, and have much lower friction.

I just rang the store we ordered them from (Pacific Trimming), and the guy was telling me that the metal version of the Riri Aquazips do have gaps, and they're used for boots – and the plastic version don't have gaps, and apparently "more waterproof". But he said the metal ones are still quite waterproof. To be honest, I'm really quite confused…sigh.

And apparently we can't change the metal ones for the right plastic ones.

The plot thickens.

I rang the LA distributor for Riri (the company that makes the AquaZips) – they told me there's no such version as a metal Riri Aquazips.

Apparently, the Aquazips only come in plastic.

The metal ones are just an aesthetic zip made by Riri, and not really water-proof or water-resistant.

The problem is, the distributor (Pacific Trimming) seemed to think otherwise, and wouldn't let us exchange or return the zips as they had been cut. However, on their website, that metal zip we bought was listed under Aquazips, and it clearly says waterproof:'

Not sure what we can do now though….*sigh*.
