Regular ones work just fine. Plenty of real ground

I use Groundhogs anyway.

If it is really loose, you can tie off to buried driftwood, but it's a poor Leave No Trace practice in general for established campsites.

Snow stakes work in softer soils.

Excellent. Thanks for the responses. I'm always willing to improvise, but figure I may as well start out with the right sort. I normally carry a mix of ti wires and v's.

Hey Richie: I'm thinking about doing this hike too. I'm interested if you have any info on the logistics of getting in and out from the trailhead–and which ones. also, if you have solutions to getting back to your car if you do a solo through hike.

I don't have a huge amount of time, so I was planning to do the Kings Range section starting at Matterhole and heading down to Shelter Cove. I was going to leave the car in shelter cove and hike back.

For $5 the BLM office for the Kings Range will send you a decent map and some other info including a tide timetable – though I don't think there's anything in it that you can't get online.

All the best sites are up canyon a bit from the beach itself.
I like the northern half the best and would do an in and out saving the shuttle time and expense.

Isn't there a trail that parallels the beach, up a ways, if you wanted to do a loop? Probably nice views of ocean from higher up. I think there might be a little road walking?

I don't mind an and out myself – different view looking in opposite direction. No uncertainty about route blocked requiring you backtrack

That is food for thought Jerry. I wouldn't mind taking in the view higher up. I'll have to give that some thought.

Just did this loop two weeks ago. Amazing views and great places to camp. Hard packed soil. Used rocks on top of stakes for added strength during high winds.

Route was a little tricky to follow along Cooskie Creek Trail.

Used Aluminum Y stakes.

I've done the coast of the Olympic Peninsula many times, starting in 1970s, which is similar

I was thinking about doing it for the next week, but the tides are wrong

Could do Trinity Alps or Red Buttes, but it's just a bit too cold and snowy

Probably just do something on East side of cascades
