Haven't tried dry baking yet. Looks like a lot of fun.

Can I do cookies?

OT: If we're going to yammer about correct thread placement could we at least do it with good use of punctuation! :-P

The only limiting factor for cookies would be the size of the pan. You could make a single 4" or 5" cookie depending on which pan you get. For the time and effort, I'd personally just add more chocolate chip cookie dough and just make bars instead.

You don't even really need an oven setup to bake cookies, if you're going to have a campfire. Using the refrigerator prepackaged cookie dough on any sort of pan you can adjust the heat by distance from the fire. You might have to flip once. We've done this at Scout campouts plenty of times – if they're a bit gooey in the middle you can just say you were making soft cookies.

Yeah yah I know, raw cookie dough will kill you. Undercooked hasn't killed me yet.

Eric-here are some photos of my set up but I suggest to go to Jon's site-Flat Cat Gear to get more detailed info. My thing is about solo baking using a minimal set up with the round Coughlans hex tabs. The heat/flame control is achieved by restricting the oxygen which the Epicurean does very well. If you compare at the flame with the Epicurean in the full burn mode and the baking/simmer mode it becomes obvious. See the last two photos. Just to keep up the crankiness level in this thread I'll mention Trader Joe's scone mix(just add water)is a winner.Baking kit-everythingWeight with hex tabsBaking stove windscreen set upCooking modeEpicurean in full burn modeEpicurean in simmer mode

Sometimes I wonder whether we should have a 'Stoves & Cooking Gear' sub-forum …

Anyhow, you wouldn't like it if we did have a functioning moderator. He might take exception to some of your postings.

Cheers

Don,
Thanks for the link to Flat Cat gear. That setup looks very close to a cone stove.

I still think I'll try a diffuser plate. I have an aluminum strainer that I can cut down with a saber saw to fit my CC Sidewinder on top of the two ti stake pot supports. Oooo! Backpacking DIY fever hits again.

Roger,
I think the "FOOD…" page is sufficient for recipes, etc. and "GEAR" page is fine for stoves. There will always be overlap between the two. (And who really cares about this "category fuzziness" but those with terminal OCD issues ;o).

"Anyhow, you wouldn't like it if we did have a functioning moderator. He might take exception to some of your postings."

There's plenty of exception taken to his posts already. He enjoys it. We'll start a support group!

I want to start a thread on compostable toilet paper but not sure if I should start it in gear, technique, nutrition, or since I hear it's rough, chafe.

Can I get a ruling?

On topic,

I need some of that wire mesh to make a pot stand but I've never seen it in Home Depot or Lowes. What do normal people use it for so I can figure out what section it is in?

Ian,

Use stainless mesh, not the Zinc Plated steel "hardware cloth" sold in most lumber yards..

The Zinc is toxic when heated and rusts faster than stanless . I am not even sure if local hardware orlumberstores even sell anything other than the Zinc plated stuff.

Thanks Jimmer! I'm aware of one horror story of a amateur blacksmith using galvanized piping in his DIY forge. Makes sense that could cause a very bad day.

Off to google I go.

"chafe"

Chaff, not chafe. It is a completely different meaning.

LMAO!

Now that's priceless Bob! I think you just made my week!

Thank you though. I spend enough time down in the bowels of BPL to know it's chaff!

" I spend enough time down in the bowels of BPL to know it's chaff! "

Yes, but outside the bowels you might see some chafe.

Just don't get rubbed the wrong way.

Nope.
We don't have a functioning moderator…

Does that mean that we have a malfunctioning moderator?

Quick – scram the control rods!

We could also spray a cadmium solution over you, Roger.

Zinc is toxic when heated? Since when. It can be toxic when vaporized which occures at a very high temperature. If anyone had managed to vaporize the galvanized coating on their pot stand please let us know what you used to do it.
If your really worried about zinc stop taking those multi-vitamin pills and eating sun dried tomatoes.
Can we start a form for urban legends when we get a funtioning moderator?

I think Jimmer is right, eliminate all the subforums. I do disagree about the title of gear though.

Call it Piss & Moan. It would fit a far larger percentage of the recent posts if you ask me.
