Gear Swap

How-To:

• Create a listing with the "+ Post New Topic" link.
• Include the following in your listing title: brand, product name/type, condition, original price. Example of a good title: "MLD Monk Tarp (DCF) – Used (Good) – $100"
• Don't put "FS/WTT/WTB/PIF" in the listing title - it will automatically be added (FS = for sale, WTT = want to trade, WTB = want to buy, PIF = pay it forward).
• Describe your item in your post: price, condition, brand, product name, shipping terms, options (size, color, variant, etc.), payment type(s) accepted. Optionally, include: photos of the actual item, ships from location, model year, damage or wear notes, etc.
• You have a 60-minute editing window after your initial post to modify it.
• Buyers and sellers may communicate in the listing thread via public replies. Offers and transaction details should be kept confidential and made only through the backpackinglight.com private messaging platform.

Guidelines:

• Allowed Items: Gear Swap is for backpacking-related items only. No firearms. Don’t sell stolen, counterfeit, or otherwise illegal items.
• Posting Rules: One post per item - please don’t create multiple listings for the same gear. No “highest bidder” or auction-style listings. Please don’t link to outside classified ads.
• Pay it Forward (PIF) listings: To accept a pay-it-forward (PIF) listing, you agree to either (1) post a new PIF Gear Swap listing, (2) post a new Member Gear Review, or (3) post a new Member Trip Report.
• Bumping, Status, & Visibility: If you bump a WTS post, you need to drop the price by at least 10% to float the listing back to the top of the Gear Swap forum. WTB and WTT posts can be bumped once every two weeks. Once your item is gone, please use the green MARK AS SOLD / CLOSE LISTING button.
• Payments & Risk Awareness: Be cautious if a seller asks for PayPal Friends & Family instead of Goods & Services - scams do happen.
• Disputes & Moderation: Backpacking Light doesn’t mediate transactions or disputes, but fact-based experiences may be shared to help the community.
• System Maintenance: Listings are automatically removed after 90 days as part of routine cleanup.

Known Issues:

• If you set filter criteria that returns zero listings, the filters disappear. Click here to refresh page if filters disappear.
• An issue was reported on the morning of 20.Dec.2025, the "Mark as Sold/Close Listing" button was not actually closing the listing and incorrectly redirected the user to the Member Dashboard. This issue was resolved this evening @ ~8 PM US MT.
