Many a wise teacher has said that if you really want to learn something, don’t just read about it: do it yourself. When Backpacking Light’s Wilderness Trekking III program headed into the Beartooth mountains in October, all of the course participants were traveling in ultralight style, on the edge of winter. These were perfect conditions for learning by making tough gear choices and experiencing the consequences. I’ve previously reported on the events of my group during the weeklong course. In this report I will take a closer look at the gear we carried, how it fared and some of the techniques we used.
