Prior to the introduction and wide dissemination of merino wool in the mid to late 1990s, little of interest had happened in the world of baselayers since polyester took over from polypropylene in the early 1980s. Throughout the ‘oughts merino increased and consolidated its market share, and the merits and demerits of polyester and merino baselayers became increasingly well defined. Since this publication tested and defined these attributes back in 2006, little has changed, and the work of Dixon, Rietveld, and Wilson is still a good summation of the performance characteristics of the two main baselayer fabrics. Their conclusions remain valid today.
