Hello,

I’ve been reading about zinc oxide as a quality multi-use item (https://backpackinglight.com/forums/topic/43849/#comments) and I’m wondering if it’s still a staple. If so, can you help me pick a brand? I’ve done a little bit of research, which included some criticism of “nano” zinc, which comes in clear formulations of zinc oxide.

In any case, the thread above recommends this product: https://www.amazon.com/Zinc-Oxide-Diaper-Ointment-Fougera/dp/B000GCL2D6, which is $8.65 for 2 oz.

That page links to another for only $10/lb: https://tinyurl.com/y7k8ghlz.

How can I compare the quality of these two, or other, options? Am I looking for a particular/minimum zinc oxide percentage? Should I be looking for / avoiding certain other ingredients?

Thanks!

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00569GU18/ref=psdc_3762651_t1_B000GCL2D6?th=1

This is the one that I have been using for a number of years…..repackaged into a small plastic screw top jar…..like the “Carmex lip balm jars”.

This one has 40% zinc oxide.

The Amazon 2 oz tube you provided the link for did not list what percentage of zinc oxide.

I use zinc oxide for fire starter, skin protection for chaffing, sun screen, deodorant, and for wounds.

As far as I know, high percentage of zinc oxide is better….the one thing to avoid, that I read about, was the micro zinc oxide that goes on clear…my have Ti particles or something that is so small that it might enter the body through the skin.

Hope this helps.

Tony

I tried zinc/titanium oxide sunscreen.  It easily came off from perspiration or rubbing so switched to long sleeves/pants/wide brim.

Not directly, but one of the product photos shows 200mg of zinc oxide per gram, so that would be 20%, no?
