If you look for backpacking gear lists on YouTube you’ll fine the number of videos is almost endless. Several videos are worth your time and you will find some good advice from very experienced backpackers here for backpacking in any season.
HOWSOMEVER… there is a lot BS in many videos. Â and decent advice but “quirky” in that it may be extreme SUL gear or “Bush Craft” heavy, old fashioned gear. Some videos are even on camps that can’t be more than 1/2 mile from their pickup as their gear is heavy and only for car camping. Plus. the British videos feature gear we usually don’t have access to here in the colonies. So, while interesting, they are more curiosities than “what to buy” videos for Yanks.
For a beginner the best thing to do is watch a bunch of the American YT videos then come back here to BPL and ASK about gear you are considering buying. And of course RENT or BORROW any gear the same or similar to gear you may be interested in buying. BTW, Until you know a lot more about backpacking stay away from Walmart’c gear. It may look cool but have drawbacks you don’t understand.
I come here. See gear that I like. Then I go to YouTube to see it used in the field. Many cottage brands don’t come up on YouTube until you search for them. You can’t search if you don’t know what to search for.
Good point.  Check out gear on BPL that interests you and  research it on YT.
YouTube does have some decent reviews  If you watch a few reviews on the same item you get a better idea of how it performs in the field.
It’s a lot of back and forth. I grew up reading Consumer Reports Magazine. When I got older, I realized that there were more than four brands. That’s where YouTube lacks. You have to know what to search for or everything that comes up is Durston or Wildebear.
