Xmid Pro1 for taller guy?

The Altaplex is quite a large/spacious 1P tent, but yes X-Mid Pro 1 end walls are steeper to give more useable length/height at the ends and more interior volume.

The Altaplex is 100″ long, 57″ high, and the fly typically floats off the ground by about 6″. The X-Mid Pro 1 is 98″ long but you sleep at a 18 degree angle to that so it’s 103″ along the sleeping axis and that rises to dual 45″ peaks.  Below are the side profiles of these two tents shown to scale:

For ‘useable length’ we normally look at the height at 12″ off the ground, which is 88″ in the Altaplex and 93″ in the X-Mid Pro 1. So the X-Mid Pro 1 is 5″ longer at 12″ off the ground and that grows to about a 10″ difference if we look 20″ off the ground. The Altaplex can be made more spacious using the end panel guyouts, but will still always be shorter. So the steeper end walls do give the X-Mid Pro 1 more useable length and mean that you can transition from laying down to sitting up without brushing your head on the fly.

Length at 12″ height is a great metric I wish more manufacturers would post with their specs. Who cares if your tent is 120″ long when you only have 78″ at 12″ height or greater over that distance.
