I was a Chaco sandal believer for many years prior to actually considering how heavy they were: a whopping 26.8 oz for my pair! I’ll still use my Chacos for classy occasions like outdoorsy weddings, but for most of my adventuring both in town and on trail I have switched over to the Xero Shoes Z-Trail EV Hiking Sandal. My pair only weighs 9.3 oz, a 17.5 oz weight savings over my Chacos, and I find their flexible sole to be much more comfortable for day to day and hiking wear. I will wear them around camp, for easy water crossings, for canoeing (including miles of portaging), for day hikes, and around town.

Things I like (other than the weight savings): They pack flat, so they are easily tucked into the side pocket of my backpack or my carry on luggage. Their flexible sole and tread works well to provide traction in slippery and wet conditions. The straps are easily adjustable, so I can cinch them down tightly when I need to scramble or portage a canoe. I can wear a pair of thick wool socks with them comfortably. I can feel the ground (in a good way) when I hike in them. I consider it a luxury when I can change into them at the end of a long day.

Things that I don’t like: I have found that the Velcro closure at the back is the first thing to give out, so I’ve generally ended up sewing up the back and taking them on and off by loosening the straps, like I would my Chaco sandals. If I am going through mud my feet will slide around on the flat bottom despite how tightly I might strap them. The attachment point on the outside front edge is where they are most likely to completely break, and quite a bit harder than the Velcro to fix while on a trip (though it can be done).

For me, the weight savings for these sandals balances out how much less durable they are compared to the Chacos. I also generally wear more minimalistic shoes, so the lack of support these provide is more comfortable for me, but they might not work well for folks who need more support. I have liked these sandals enough that I am on my second pair, however I might try a different style or brand when these wear out.
