I recently was gifted a ULA backpack by a friend.
I have not yet learned the whole story but was able to make contact with the person who had it custom made.
I love the pack. It’s the very one I had decided to buy when the funds became available.
The only things I really wanted to change are the high vis orange sections and the trail name, embordered in hi-vis orange.
As far as the orange patches on the shoulder straps, I decided to try a black sharpie marker. It turned the orange, brown, which I am very happy with.
I read about using an iron to set it but instead used a hair drier. When I rewet it and rub it hard with white paper towel, it seems to be stable.
I emailed with Peter of ULA and he said they would replace the front collar for $50 plus return shipping. I’m not jumping on that just yet. If I roll it down enough, it doesn’t show.
So, my main question now is about patching X Pac. I read through some older threads here about this but still want to find the latest on this subject. I chose to remove the embordered name, but it left some holes, in addition to the one small that was already there, and the holes made by the embroidery.
When I emailed ULA, about patching XPAC, this was Peter’s response….
“Hey Tim, X-Pac is pretty tricky to get things to stick to it(long
term). I’d probably use Seam Grip WP on the inside of the pack,
however, the pack itself isn’t waterproof per se so to be candid, I
probably wouldn’t worry about it. I don’t think I’d want a gloopy mess
of seam seal in there personally.”
So, I guess I could use Seam Grip WP on the inside or use
one of the tapes (3M?) that was talked about in other threads.
I bought a grab bag that had scraps of Dyneema and some tapes. The one-sided clear tape (like sold by RSBR) I am familiar with but not the other, some of which has 3M on the back and looks to be Dyneema maybe.
I know the pack is not waterproof, not seam sealed, but where this is would likely be pretty exposed to the rain.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
