I’m looking for a tent that I can use year round. By year round, I don’t mean actual snow camping. I live in Texas and in the winter, I’ll be in Texas ( Big Bend ). In the summer, I’ll be in Washington.

I like to keep my gear inside my tent. On my last Washington trip ( Olympics ), deer were all over the campgrounds. I’ve seen deer ruin trekking poles ( I assume the same for backpacks ) to get to the salt from your sweat. Because of this when I’m in areas with lots of deer, I want to keep my stuff in my tent.

I have access to an Xmid pro, so don’t let that sway your comments. Also, I have a 20% HMG coupon. So I would get the Ultamid 2 / solid inner for a little cheaper.

Which would you get and why?

The Ultamid appears to be a one pole tent, while the Durston’s are two pole. But the Xmid Pro is much lighter., even in 2P. (The Xmid Pro 1P is said to be coming out in Dec.) The HMG is a BIG tent and will take a lot of careful folding to pack up, as I understand stuffing with DCF is a no-no. And protection is an issue with the HMG, because when the door is zipped open, the rain at the front of the HMG tent will come pouring in. The inserts sold separately for several hundred more dollars are ambiguous about this in the site photos .

Were a mid my choice, and I wanted good protection, I’d look further. Otherwise I’d stick with the Xmid Pro 2. Since you have access to one, I’d check that out first. If you don’t use a second trek pole, you can make one out of an avalanche rescue pole, or just buy a cheap telescoping pole like a Cascade Designs or Yukon Charlie and trim it to fit. They may be cheap, but I’ve tried both, and they are plenty sturdy and 100% adjustable. Dan has put a lot of thought into his tents, and may suggest a pole.

I have an Ultamid 2 currently. I use it primarily for snow camping, but I have also used it for later season camping in which bugs are not a problem. I have been thoroughly unimpressed. The tent footprint is huge, and it can be very finnicky to find a place to set it up. If you set it up on anything other than perfectly flat ground, it is difficult to get a decent pitch. Spending a lot of time futzing with the pitch when it’s snowing or raining is terrible. Opening the door causes snow or rain to just pour onto, so you have to move all of your gear to one side and carefully move it before you open the door. For snow camping in the PNW, DCF sucks. The snow sticks to it so badly, and the tent probably doubles in weight if it snows. It also becomes nearly impossible to get back into its stuff sack. It’s also pretty fragile, and I have easily poked holes into it. I have a Duplex and never had that problem. In contrast, I have two friends who have X-Mids on the same trips, and they love them. I will be selling my Ultamid once the X-Mids are available again.
