i should have thought about providing this LINK sooner. it’s my favorite resource for looking at lots of tents in one spot. it doesn’t have some of the cottage makers, but pretty much everyody else.

Lots of great advice in the thread already.  The only thing I’d add to it is comfort.  I generally like adding one to the stated number of occupants, ESPECIALLY if cold weather/ snow/ rain are anticipated.  My wife feels claustrophobic in a 2 person tent, even in good weather.  For a dedicated 2 person tent, for backpacking I’d pick a 3 man, and for car camping I’d pick a 4 man.  I think I’m far more likely to be doing cold weather camping on a car or motorcycle than I am while backpacking.  Weight becomes much less of an issue then.

If weight is less of an issue, tents with vertical doors at both head and foot end, like the Tarra, Kaitum, Keron, etc., feel WAY roomier inside than those with sloped feet.  (Sorry, forgot to mention these are all from the Hilleberg line.  When I think of cold and snow, I tend to forget there even are other brands. lol)

While I agree with the Hilleberg recommendations for all of the usual reasons, I’d like to put in a vote for the Sierra Designs Convert 3, one of which I picked up recently on sale on the strength of reviews like this one.

No, it’s not a light tent, but space for weight it’s reasonably competitive. It ticks a number of boxes: roomy for 2, vertical walls at both ends, capacious vestibule with the option to add another, dry pitch,  visually striking for photos. I haven’t had mine out in any serious weather yet so I can’t speak to snow loading. I can say that it’s spacious, solid-feeling, and has been condensation-free so far in some pretty nasty humid rain.

The primary advantage over a Hillie is that the Convert can be had many places on sale (including 25% off right now at SD’s site) and can be combined with ActiveJunky for greater savings yet. Smart maneuvering of, say a Moosejaw sale + points + AJ could save you substantial trip’s worth of logistics costs.
