I grew up in Rhode Island with similar cold and wet weather.

I currently live in Colorado with colder, drier and much more sunnier weather.

If I was back in Rhode Island I’d wear a fleece and a wind shell combo for around town esp if walking places.

In fact I do the same around Colorado. I walk to work and back ~4 miles R/T.

Keep the puffy for the backcountry when stopped or in camp.

When trying to look a bit more fashionable, I wear a Filson jacket given to me 12 years ago for my birthday.

“Justin, Maybe in Santa Rosa, CA… Not in Montana”

I don’t see your logic here. Down is warm for it’s weight and packed size, which is not very relevant unless you are storing it in a backpack. How is down more suitable for cold climates than heavy wool or heavy fleece? Down is not warmer by any standard other than being warmer for its weight/packed size. It is far less warm for it’s thickness than heavy fleece or wool.

you know how much fleece youd need to wear to be “warm” in -40C?

Ah, trick question!

The exact same amount as you’d need at -40°F.

A trick question deserves a trick answer. ;^)

ahhhh … but im talking about canuckistani winters here …

not ‘murica (well maybe parts of alaska)

Youtube video

the partial answer to the question is that it requires 5-6 300 wt fleeces for the same insulation as a MB permafrost parka … and im pretty sure thats not “thermal sufficient” down to -40C

i love fleece as all BPLers know .. but theres no way im walking around with more than 3 on …

And my Grandmother made really good ravioli.

Has as much to do with the OP’s question about NYC winters as the Canadian Rockies winters

Which is to say “Not  much at all”.

paul … im simply responding to justins statement that theres no point in down jackets for “normal” use …

the thing about BPL is that its likely the worse place for opinions on the general use of gear outside of UL hiking/backpacking …. if it were up to BPLers we would be wearing cuben rain chaps and sil ponchos even to business meetings =P

also note that many a woman would need to wear MUCH more insulation than men … my favorite climbing partner wears her dead bird poofay 24/7 in the fall/winter seasons

if you want proof in the pudding, just look at the popularity of the items … even in HONGCOUVAH you see AZN grandmas wear down POOFAYZ, often with dead bird logos

uniqlo figured out why years ago …
