Does anyone have any information, or a site they can link me too, for the snowpack and meltoff in the central Wind River range this year? We have a trip coming up, during the last week of July, entering at Elkhart trailhead and go to the areas around Island Lake. I was hoping to get an idea of what we might be walking into.
That low and, at that time of the summer, I wouldn’t expect to find any snow. Â You will most likely have snow in the higher end of Indian Basin and perhaps the far north end of Titcomb Basin if you venture out above 11,000 feet, but the plateau around Island Lakes area should be completely free.
I would also expect mosquitos to still be significant as well as the biting gnats. Â Water runoff could still be high but unless you are crossing Pole Creek you should be fine. Â Pole creek isn’t particularly difficult, but high runoff combined with a good rain storm can make it more interesting if you aren’t particularly adept at water crossings.
