Having lost a bit of weight I am finding I am feeling the cold more, well lets say I am freezing but the dog is happy as the heater is getting a hammering [its winter downunder] :) Anyway I have come back to to this idea of a wind jacket for running and riding and maybe walking as well. In my research I came across a couple of interesting options at Ultra Light Outdoor Gear (UK):

Montane Featherlite 7 which weighs in at 46g for the large.

OMM Sonic which weighs in at 62g for the large.

Both stow in their collars.

I appreciate that maybe in a backpacking context these are not a mainstream clothing item but I thought I would ask here anyway as maybe we have some trail runners or runners or cyclists with experience of same or thoughts. So not being that up on wind jackets would these tick the boxes? I am assuming the three key criteria are wind protection, breathability and light rain protection. Being light and packable are definite pluses for me at least.

I love a wind jacket for hiking. It’s light, packs small, easy to pull out when I stop for a break, easy to don, easy to take off, doubles as a semi-permeable vapor retarder under clothes on a cold night, dries fast, protects my main insulation from my sweaty shirt if I need warmth in camp before I have time to change, …I could go on. It’s one clothing item that gets used on practically every trip.

Edit: I meant to say that I wouldn’t count on a wind jacket being any help in rain.

Lately I’ve just been using the Frogg Toggs as both rain and wind. However one of my favourite jackets of all time and really should be the one I take on most 3 season trip is my Patagonia Houdini. Windproof, breathable, hoody, ultralight and handles summer rain just fine.

Get something with a hood, it means you are not so quick to put on rain gear

I use the Berghaus hypertherm vapourlight hoody. Light, water repellent-ish, warm ears, packs small, reversible for different conditions. Win.

I have decided to try out the Montane Featherlite 7 which is coming from the Wiggle in the UK for AU$100 so around US$73.  Not a huge amount of swag if it does not work out.
