Me and a couple of friends did an overnighter to Willett Hot Springs in Sespe (Sess-pee) Wilderness in Los Padres NF. It was a great, quick trip with almost nobody on the trail which was great because it can get crowded here.

Link to the trip report.

That’s a nice walk for a quick sub-24 hour trip. There are some other parts of the Sespe Wilderness worth visiting when you have the time/inclination for more miles and/or elevation. Still Willet is a great introduction to southern LP. Thanks for sharing your TR and photos.

Nico, what do you recommend? Looking at a map I was trying to figure out a loop. Maybe head East down Sespe River trail to Sespe Hot Springs and work my way back West and connect to Piedra Blanca trail and back South to the trailhead. I think it’s possible with a few miles of road hiking on the Northern section.

Craig, besides a bit of rain it was perfect hiking weather.

Don, I sent you a PM. There are a few options for loops through the Sespe involving either the Pine Mountain area or Nordhoff Ridge (the two main formations that form the Sespe River valley) that stay entirely on trail/fire road. If you have an appetite for off-trail bushwhacking and navigation, there are some adventurous loops to be had in the far southern end of the Sespe as well.

Nico,

Thank you. I received your detailed PM. I may try this loop early next year as an overnighter like you did and begin checking out some possibilities for the Pine Mtn and Nordhoff Ridge areas. One of the nice things about living in Southern CA. Some many options that are close by.

Don,

Appreciate the detailed report. Being local (OC) I will definitely be planning a visit.  Btw, was that a Duomid?

@johnk-1 No, it’s a Locus Gear Hapi in CF. I think the Duomid is great but I went with the Hapi for 3 main reasons: 1. Zipper on the short side so you don’t have to climb over the other person if sleeping 2.

2. Slightly more square footage.

3. Lighter by about 1 oz.

None these are a deal breaker but combined it made my decision easier. The location on the short side was the big difference to me. I emailed MLD and asked if that was an option. It is not. If it was I probably would have got a Duomid.
